I've been using the wrong spelling (Kwan instead of Kwon)... sorry about that, I'll try not to do it again. Beg your pardon, mesdames et messieurs.

Common mistake. Kwan = School, Kwon = foot (rough translations)

Actually, Kwon = hand (Tae = foot) ;)

Okay, I did double check this before I posted the above and I was taught that Kwon means hand; I also found it on a Taekwondo website just to make sure. But....as I continued to browse, I did find a site where they state Kwon as meaning foot......... However.....
Quote from "Mastering Taekwondo" by Tae Eun Lee
"'Kwon' means more than just stiking hands. It refers to the upper body and the arms as well....."

You are right, I stand corrected. I always get those two reversed. Foot-Hand-Way just doesn't register in my brain.
According to my Hangul dictionary, tae is actually closer to smashing or leaping than the anatomical foot.
BTW in Korean tae is pronounced with a long a sound (tay) rather than the Americanized i sound (tie).

I had the same problem of remembering which is which. I always try to find tricks remember things and if they are relative enough to the material it usually sticks. My trick for this is to think from the ground up. I make it relative by the fact that everything grows from the ground up, you work from the ground (bottom) up in your career, or in anything that you develop yourself in...including Taekwondo. Therefore, Tae = lower body, foot, kicking; Kwon = upper body, hands and Do= Way or the development of the mind, etc... Makes more sense to me to think of it that way and now I don't forget! :) Thinking up different tricks like that has helped me immensely to remember the myriad of things that we learn.

Thank you, that's a good way to remember it!
