ok, im pretty new at this stuff, my only experience has been karate, but that was when i was a lot younger, and i only got to green belt...anyway, heres my question
while i was taking karate, they taught me to use the staff. over the years ive kinda forgotten most of it, and i want to learn how to uh...twirl it, for lack of a better term.
i saw someone doing it, and it looked like they were holding the staff in their fist, and the motion was achieved through the movement of their wrist and arm, and not from the fingers.
i was wonder if anyone could either tell me how this is done, or direct me to someplace that has information on this technique.
thanks,
Dave

Here you go.

Seriously that FASTEST way to lose your weapon is to start spinning it around like you are in a movie. There is no surer way to prove you have little or no fighting ability with your weapon than to begin to twirl it about your person.
The last time I saw a person demonstrate actual ability with a weapon at an event was over 12 years ago. It is kinds sickening what they have done to it.
Don't forget your glitter uniform and boom box. :D

Whoa, thanks a lot, Richard. I could really use that! :D
The quarter staff and archery are the two weapons I want to learn first.

thanks, ill remember that link if i ever become a cheerleader :p
actually to tell you the truth, im a bit of a nerd, and i wanted to make try my hand at a star wars fan film. i think you can see where this is going :D
im going for the double bladed lightsaber effect, and they look really cool whilst spinning. so i was just trying to find out how to do it without wacking myself in the face with a red-painted dowel :)
so presuming im not actually trying to defend myself, how would i do this?
thanks,
Dave

Get a stick, get in front of a mirror and practice.
Bonus points if you manage not to look like a dork. :D

Take up a sword art and learn something useful. That way I wont have to poke holes in how badly you fight :p
Dmshiplo - if you want to learn from a master of twirling the staff. I know of a local gentleman that can give you private lessons for very little money. Here is the Master's Website. (http://www.jedimaster.net)
Remember it is a weapon and not a toy. You may want to look at Jodo (Jyodo) for training. Call around at local Aikido Dojo to see if they teach it seperately from Aikido.
Please don't get involved in Karate-Show like they have on ESPN.

Twirling a staff is quite easy once you figure out how to do it. I'm not even going to try and explain how I do it— that would just confuse the hell out of anyone reading my post. My best advice: hold it in your fist, not inbetween your fingers a la baton. Oh, and watch some early episodes of Xena. It really is a pretty useless thing to learn, although I must say it did come in handy when my partner and I did a fight seen for our drama class. Good luck!

lol you need to run away as far as you can. You are 14, if that bill person reads your post he will start talking really weird again and say things like "NINJERS" and
"PH43r" he did it to me.
RUN FOR THE HILLS!

I've had my fair share of encounters with those of the troublemaker race. I'm also used to being treated like a widdle kiddie. Unfortunately, some people can't seem to see beneath the surface. Thanks for the heads up.
