Well, I just had my first class in Muay Thai. My shins are swollen, my knuckles hurt, my elbow is a pretty shade of purple, and my nose has been bleeding for an hour. I Love It!!! This is the style I've been looking for. Nothing like good hard contact to get your attention!

Sound like a bad place to me.

Your kru is not a good one if he allows such injuries to occur during class.

My fault actually. I was asked repeatedly if I wanted pads, and refused. (yes the word IDIOT does come to mind) The nose shot was my fault as well. We were practicing a series of blocks and I dropped my hands to block a knee 1 move to early and caught an elbow instead. I did learn a valuable lesson..I'm not as young as I used to be and it actually hurts the next day now! (pads will be in my future)

I cant imagine a teacher and bussiness owner allowing something like that to happen, so forgive me if I doubt legitamacy.

It wouldnt be your fault, its the teachers school and to the most part responsible for everything that goes on in the school.

Jeff is right, that many injuries on your first day does not speak good of that school. The instructor shouldn't have allowed it to happen regardless of your insistance that you didn;t want pads.

Not only that, but the fact that your partner is throwing elbows hard enough to bloody your nose speaks to the control your kru is teaching his other students. I spar almost every night, (have been for almost ten years), and I have never been hit in the face with an elbow. Not because I am so awsome at defense, but because these techniques are too dangerous to not pull them when sparring. And your kru should never have let a first timer spar without any protection. That is just poor judgement on his part not yours. You need to re-evaluate your instruction, MT is not meant to be that rough when sparring. If you go to Thailand and spar, there they spar very lightly and never injure one another.

But not if you watch American made movies which seem to say you need to do things to your body that will have you in a wheel chair by the time your 30 ;)

Pro fighters in Thailand fight for a living and take great care to not get hurt in their training.
Sparring is light or absent.
