i wuz testing yesterday for my blue belt and during the grappling portion i got pinned. i tried to get out for awhile wen my sensai said in the backround if i can't get out of the pin then i automaticly fail. i became desperate and as a last attempt i broke down and did a tiger claw to the guys chest. it got me out of the pin, but i have very long sharp nails and he was bleeding VERY badly, i felt bad, because i didnt want to actually hurt him. i feel guilty about this, like i cheated, whats your opinion?

Depends on where you study. With my group, bite marks are completely acceptable. Fingernails are okay as long as everyone leaves with the same eyes they arrived with.
The big test is... Did you pass? You escaped, so I can't fault the technique.
Oh... put your name in your sig, Emily.

If you were "unsportsmanlike" that's bad. But maybe you taught him something, too? That's good.
I teach that if a man of superior size and strength has you immobilized but is not actually damaging you (such as with a forearm across your throat, slowly pressing in), that your best bet is to rest. He is there because he has an agenda. As soon as he moves to achieve his aganda, you will get the opening(s) you need to press your defence.
The tester's agenda was just to pin you until told to stop. He allowed you the opening to defeat his agenda and to gain your own and you took it. Good for you.
There is no try, there is just 'do'.
PS
edited to add:
Seldom in a fight will this ever happen unless it's kids who stall in their attack or who want to 'torture' the other kid a little bit with spitting in the face, taunts etc.
Fights are dynamic...ony in a dojo will you get this type of stall in a 'match.'
First I want to say, I probably would feel bad too.............just because I do not like to hurt anyone. But I assume he was larger and probably stronger and you had to "deal" with that. The man should have to "deal" with what you bring to the table! Also, i have learned that once the Sensei says get out or fail something bad is coming my way if I am the guy they are testing against! All that being said................................it makes you a good person for feeling bad, but also a good martial artist for thinking of it. You both learned, he will certainly heal. He will laugh about it later and tell others to use it............................or avoid it depending on your situation.
You did good
Nothing like reviving a thread that's over two years old.

I know what a purple nurple is, I'm guessing a purple herbie is performed on a different part of the anatonmy?

Years ago, one of our female black belts took great delight in handing out purple nurples to the guys during randori. Several of us spoke to her about the appropriateness, not to mention the fairness of such a stunt. Finally, one of the male students mentioned it to our sensei. He said, "what's good for the goose..." and the next time she grabbed a random nipple, the offended party grabbed her back. She screamed bloodly murder and stomped over to Sensei to complain. He asked her who grabbed first and told her that she was wearing a black belt, not a pink one and she shouldn't expect special treatment. Problem solved.

This just proves that sometimes it's good to bring back an old thread. :wink2:
We would not have heard Mark's story. Good one!:D

At some point in every 'Women's" Thread I get freaked out. It has happened again. :yikes:
Poor Richard. But, you must like it since you keep coming back:bunnyhop:
Yes, it is the best kind of addiction. Women are likie martial arts: no matter how bad you get hurt, you always come back and you only remember the good times.:p
