Since I am probably going to my first Judo class next week at Willy Cahill's Judo academy, I was wondering how all of you on here thought of him as a coach. Is he a good coach? I know he has very high rank in both Judo and JuJutsu, and that he has coached many teams over the years. Will his status as a more competitive coach detract from my education in Judo as an art at all? Thanks

What kind of question is that? Does that translate to "Gee, will they be too rough?"
Let's see, 10th dan in Danzan Ryu and 7th Dan in Judo. I am sure he doesn't know much about the "art" aspect. :)

Willy Cahill is probably one of the finest instructors in the country. Everyone should be so lucky to have the opportunity to train with him! I agree with Clif, get on the mat!
Elliott,
Is your question about will I get the School of Budo or the School of Sport Judo? If so, you will have your choice, but without even knowing it you will get both. In class you will refer to him as Sensei and you will learn the basics of Ukemi and the first Kyo of the Go-kyo no-Waza this is the budo aspect of Judo.
Now you start competiting we are still in the budo aspect. Then one day someone shows you a cool counter/cut/turnout. You have started down the path of sport Judo. If you want to be an athlete/competitor the Dojo will announce what tournaments they will be attending. If you don't want to compete, simply don't.
Remember: Principle of Maximum-Efficient Use of Mind and Body (Seiryoku Zenyo), and the Principle of Perfection of One's Self and Mutual Welfare and Benefit (Jita Kyoei).
PS
Ask him about Kosen Judo.

Hi Guys,
PURIST ALERT!!!
Just a reminder that there is only one style of Judo, and that is Kodokan Judo.
Any kazure (variation or 'modification') of a throw based on an individual preference does not make a different style of Judo.
The Kodokan web page is very clear on this. :D

You are correct there is only one type of Judo and that is Kodokan Judo. Because of that, competition is governed by the IJF and not by the Kodokan.

Which is why the Kodokan and the All Japan Judo Federation do not use the blue gi, or use multi-colored tatami, or use weight divisions (except to qualify for the western championships)?

I'm sorry if my question seemed like I was insulting him. I called there today and talked with them and it came off as a really great outfit. I'm starting next week (they have no classes on weekends).

Elliot, you are one lucky devil! Take advantage of the opportunity to train with some of the very best and I think you will eventually realize that you stumbled on to a real find!

I'm doing the stupefied eye-blink:
You are asking if Willy Cahill, the former US Olympic Judo coach knows how to coach? Seriously?

I'm sorry if thats so shocking to you, but yes, that was what I had asked initially. I am not a person from inside the martial arts community, and don't really follow anything in it. Oh sure, you might say that because he was a coach of the Olympic teams that I surely must have heard of him, but I hadn't. His place was the only Judo academy near here which looked like it might be something worth attending, and I wanted to ask that on here (a forum i found on a google search) because it seemed like there were a lot of knowledgable people. I did not mean to insult him at all, and now that I know more about him, I can see where I came off as insulting. Again, I apologize. But, now that I know more, I can barely wait for next week when I start for real.
Actually it would be a lie to say "martial arts community" because most of my cousins are heavily involved in CMA. I realize that I still sound like an ***, but I'm too lazy to re-word what I said. Sorry bout that one too.

Elliot:
Don't take it the wrong way. I don't think anyone really thought you were being insulting. For us in the Jujutsu and Judo community, Willy Cahill is a legend for the most part. But we are a part of that community, so we are all famliar with him. Considering that there are a LOT of flakes in the martial arts community and your non-familiarity with Cahill Sensei, your question makes sense. So don't take it personally, and I can tell you, you have a lot of folks in this forum that are envious!
Anyway, enjoy your training, and we would love to hear about how you are doing, your impressions, etc, once you get started. So please keep us informed.

Thank you for your understanding Rob, and thanks to everyone else for the encouragement. I'm sure I will have a great experience from what I read here!
