:t2: Another profound occurence during the interesting times we currently enjoy is the highly successful Mars Rover mission. Originally designed to survive the -60 below zero Martian sols (a martian day = 24.6 hours) for only ninety days, the two desk-size Martian explorers are now over 190 days of productive exploration. It has been definately established that there was once was liquid water on Mars, in fact the rover OPPORTUNITY discovered a dried shallow salt water sea bed the size of Oklahoma. PLUS, it has also been firmly established that the conditions on Mars is conducive to supporting life - though life has not yet been found. :t2:

to read NASA's webpage regarding this highly successful United States mission to another planet.

I keep up with the rovers, but I'm also interested in the conspiracies concerning mars. You know, assuming the pictures are not doctored, there's some really interesting pictures taken there.
There's almost proof enough for me that there is vegetative life there also. How else can you account for the seasonal darkening of some places on the red planet? I dont care what nasa or the govt says. I mean, look who it is, its our govt. And nasa may be a private firm, but its govt funded.
[EDIT] Said the word "Mars" too much.

Hi Daniel,
I too think they found life on Mars, but are keeping it quiet. In fact, the 1976 VIKING missions to Mars recorded positive findings in their biology tests, but I just found out that the results of those biology tests were ambiguous, because scientists couldn't agree if the results were of biological origin, or just a positive chemical reaction to the biological experiments.
Now there is irrefutable evidence that Mars had salt water seas, that it rained on Mars, and today it has been established that Mars is conducive to supporting life, but they just haven't found it yet.
Now the official disclaimer is that if they do find life on Mars, it will probably have been of Earth origin, from an earlier probe or satellite. Why don't they just tell the truth? Us mere Earthlings can handle the discovery of microbes or bacteria on Mars, that would be such a great thing!
Martial Artists are wont to ponder great philosophical connumdrums, and another profundity such as life on Mars, would be totally fitting for the Martial Artist to meditate. :rolleyes2

A Mars day is called a 'Sol' by scientists (24.6 hrs). So you have longer to work, rest, and play. :D

Like Cassini, it seems to me a loooonnnggg shot to drop a probe on Titan. I'm not familiar with the techniques they use to project the spacecrafts position in relation to Titan, but I have to assume that they know what they're doing.
If there is life found on the moon they wont tell us. It has too many religious and philosophical implications. They'll have to admit that life can survive in non-earth like atmospheres. Just because we breathe oxygen doesnt mean an ET has to.
Sorry to ramble, but this topic is one of my few but very strong interests.

I do NOT believe there is any kind of organized conspiracy regarding life on Mars. Remember the Mars fossil? We were completely prepared for the fact and science was ready to confirm it. Just turned out to not be the case.
It is science fellas, not a eposide of Star Trek. They aren't gonna confirm life until they have confirmed life.
The likelyhood that Mars supported life in the past is almost a certainty. They just need to actually find the evidence first. Gonna take some time, we didn't find our dinosaur bones until very recently in the time man has been here.
The possibility that life (cellular) still exists on Mars is plausible. But it would not be abundant and Mars is kinda remote. So again we have to wait for the conclusive evidence.
That is what science is, known provable fact.
Now take the tin foil hats off before your heads chafe.

I'm sorry but that is completely stupid.
Again, I refer to the "Mars rock" which they almost declared 100% prematurely.
There is no consipracy to conceal life. The notion is idiotic and absurd.
If and when life is ever found away from Earth scientists will go flipping nuts and you will hear about it immediately.

So how do you really feel?
Although I'm often quick to deride opinions I find silly, I'm of the opinion that you could have worded that more respectfully and politely in the interest of polite discourse.

Hello Richard,
Putting controversial issues under wraps is a common practice in our court of law, for example: The Martin Luther King Papers were ordered sealed until the year 2030 by federal Judge Smith, in light of the 1985 revealing of Martin Luther King's massive plagiarism on his doctoral dissertation at B.U. The Martin Luther King papers contained data regarding his association with the American Communist Party and other sensitive findings. The year 2030 was deamed a sufficient distance away to make any unusual or damaging political information to be rendered harmless or inert by time and natural deaths of those involved.
It would not be absurd to believe that anything more exotic and controversial such as finding life on Mars would not be treated the same way, if not more secretive, than the mundane Martin Luther King papers. A gag order can just as easily be placed on Mars scientists than it was on Martin Luther King scholars.

I'm sorry but stupid makes my head hurt. :D
The real problem is I expect martial artists to be far more intelligent, rational and less consipracy proned than your average reader of World Weekly News.
Also I tend to be of the school of harsh reality zen biting logic and sometimes my opinions don't sound like they came from a sensitivity trainer.
In the future I will attempt to refrain from "Hey you, stop being stupid." ;)

Nevermind.
Go ahead. I get an opinon, so do you.
I may not think much of yours, you may not value mine.
Btw, you do know they DID find unexpected life on the moon at least once didn't you? And it was immediately reported as the finding was fairly dramatic.

Thats a personal attack and I wont stand for that. First of all, you dont know me, so dont make assumptions about my intelligence.
Second, those are my opinions and beliefs, you dont agree, no prob.

Good lord get over yourself.
It was NOT a personal attack. I didn't call you a reader of WWN, I called you a martial artists. And as such I expect more of you than the readers of WWN.
My estimation of your intelligence is not an assumption but an evaluation based upon ideas you present and / or subscribe to.

You actually 'might' already know this.
Bacteria on a camera survived something like 2 years on the surface of the moon. It was discovered on a subsequent landing.

The point of this thread is not an exercise in semantics, but that something extremely profound is occuring as we type: there are two active and productive robot rovers exploring Mars right now!
If you click onto the provided JPL/NASA site, you will see actual real time photographs of a different planet than the one we're sitting on - that is very incredible. Worth meditating over.
The life on Mars issue should be on a different thread.

Hey Dan, not your fault. No apologizes necessary. Just look at Cliff H.'s response to my deep and philosophical post for an example of 'thread drift'; clearly his response belongs on the B-- site. ;)
But those live photographs from Mars are spectacular, and the two active robotic rovers are a brilliant feat of engineering. Mar's temperature ranges from -50 to -250 below zero, and those two rovers have been operating perfectly 100 days past their design-life in an average of -60 below zero temperature. That is a mind boggling achievement.

Wait until the astronauts arrive in 2025! They'll have to have double thick wooly P.J.'s! :D
Also, from the book: THE FATHER OF JUDO: A Biography of Jigoro Kano (c. 2000) by Brian N. Watson; the author pointed out "...that there would one day be a memorial to Jigoro Kano on the planet Mars" p. 125.
