Here's a little something I come up with contemplating the depth of the martial way, it is somewhat poetic but it is layed out as clear as my mind could put it.

The Art of Perfection:
Martial Art isn’t a self-defense tool, it is a self-improvement tool.
If a warrior is always eager the best his enemies, to challenge their skills he will one day realize that the only person worth challenging is himself.
Therefore the battlefield is the steppingstone of the long and arduous path of the art of perfection, the martial art.

Just curious, what do you think?

though i do agree with most of your view i think to say Martial Arts is not a self defense tool would be a lie. i think it would be far better to say that a good martial artist uses his/her art for self improvment. some people are not for the same things.

I say that it's both a self-defense tool and a self-improvement tool. As for how far the self-improvement goes, I think that depends on how much effort you put into it, because if you see yourself getting better at your art, you feel more confident and set yourself more difficult goals, push yourself a bit harder, etc. But that's just my opinion on it, and if other people think differently, then I really don't mind!! :)

P.S. I like the last statement even better. ;)

Hi there.

Some consider martial arts to be a spiritual endever. The whole aim of practice is to go through the stages of acceptance into the system, get lost in it, proficient in it until you become enlightened. This is a long and arduous task because the better you get, the more you see, the finer the refinements become. And so the circle begins again. Inevitably by the time you become enlightened your pretty tidy with your self defence! :D

Good luck and take care,

Lawrence Fisher

Yes, and by that time, we're all too old and crumbly to execute our rather well-refined self-defence that we've practised for years and that still isn't perfect. It doesn't put me off, though!! :D

Quite good. I do belive that martial art is self improvment through desier to defend self and close to. Perfection is what made martial arts grow and come out as an art which once life could be devoted to, without a lose.

A hammer is a tool. You can use it for hammering nails. You can also break cocoanuts open with them. If it is a claw hammer, you may also pry nails with it. If you are stranded on the side of a glacier, the claw can be used like pitons. If the garage door opener breaks, you may prop it open by balancing the hammer on its head. You could defend yourself with a hammer.
As a tool, its usefulness lies in what you use it for.

Absolutely true this is what the quest for the black belt is all about. Perfection of self which is a natural by-product of mastery of the body.
You are on the right path.
