Just wondering why didn't the Gracie’s add the kata's from kodokan Judo or traditional ju-jitsu to there system? after all those kata include very important things such as throws, strikes and kicks which in turn will go great with what they are teaching right now which is mostly ground techniques? Or is it because Mitsuo Maeda didn’t teach them that part of his judo or ju-jitsu?

I also personally feel that BJJ way of training is closer to Judo then traditional Ju-jitsu? It’s more Judo without all those rules and not to do? Who else feels that’s true and don’t you think it didn’t give enough credit to Judo and it’s founder Master Kano and his Randori? since Bjj do alot of that and it's one of the major part of there training?

Do you believe if the Gracie’s didn’t take out the traditions of Japanese jiu-jitsu or judo it would be better for there system?

Actually they did. Have you ever seen the Gracie self defense stuff? It looks exactly like Judo self defense stuff. Helio and Rorion emphasis it alot and so does Pedro Valente and even Royce. Lots of the newer sport fighters don't do it though. If you get a chance watch the tape "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Episode 1." It's an entire tape of Helio demonstrating the self defense moves. It's kinda cool to watch an 80+ year old man do this stuff. As far as striking, most of them box or kickbox now.

Traditional BJJ "should" be taught as a three pronged approach, if you follow Helio's teaching methods:

1. Jiujitsu with a gi
2. Self Defense techniques
3. Vale Tudo

Unfortunately some schools seem to concentrate on only one aspect.

I've always heard from mostly any BJJ expert that it is best to first learn with the gi, then when more advanced, to get into the gi-less competion (like Vale Tudo) and steet clothes self defense stuff.
