High school wrestler succeeds -- without legs
16-year-old doesn't let birth defect beat him

Trevon Jenifer was born with no legs and now finds himself wrestling as a junior at Huntingtown High School in the 103-pound class for the first time.

Jenifer, 16, was born without any legs, the result of a condition called congenital amputation, in which a part or entire limb is missing at birth. Jenifer's 95-pound body ends at his hip sockets.

The junior has forged an 8-7 record with a combination of balance and upper-body strength that has helped him overcome his condition.

Your fingers disappear in a handshake with Trevon Jenifer. Years of applying his hands as his means of transportation has turned them muscle-bound and enormous. His wrist to the tip of his middle finger measures nine inches.

Some in the wrestling community say Jenifer may experience a backlash as his skills develop. His torso is much bigger and stronger than those of his 103-pound opponents because their weight is displaced throughout a larger body.

"There will be factions that say this guy has the biceps of a guy 180 pounds and his arm strength far exceeds that of a guy who's 103 pounds," said Jim Johnson, the referee. "He's going to experience some opposition."

Hull, of USA Wrestling, said: "We have the same issue in the sport when we've got girls wrestling boys. It's tough on a person's ego."

"His visit to the Georgia State Wrestling Championship left him with an impressive record of 35-16."

That IS impressive!

oh you really did mean leg less...I wondered why a drunk wrestler would be so impressive  Do you use the term leg less for being drunk in the US??

anyway both of those guys are pretty cool. I like to see disabled competitors in mainstream sports......good stuff

No. This is the first I've heard of that euphamism.

For "drunk" we say...

wasted, trashed, hammered, stewed.

Back to the thread topic, I too have a student who was born with an amputation, in his case he has only half his right leg, some fingers and toes are irregular. Yet he still practices and does judo good.

Peace

Another old slang term for drunk: bombed.

I have lots of respect for these disabled athletes.

I have some questions, and I am NOT being sarcastic. I am being purely, dispassionately analytical.

How does one take down a guy in a wrestling match when the guy has no legs? He is obviously already down. If I have legs, can I just begin the match by laying down on the ground so the other guy can't score a takedown against me?

If I was beaten by a grappler who was missing limb(s) I would feel the need to SERIOUSLY reevaluate my training or even my involvement in the sport, no matter how good the disabled athlete is. I have observed disabled judo athletes in competition; invariably, their opponents were overly sympathetic to the point of compromising their own game to accomodate their opponent's dysfunction in some way. Many probably do it unknowingly.

We are trained to take advantage of our opponent's weaknesses. If your opponent is disabled, is it dishonorable to take advantage of that in a legal way during competition?

I don't suppose some of you watched the WWE when the had a guy in there with one leg missing. His time in there wsa something to watch. It all ended when his leg got shattered against the ring post. But even then, he wrestled quite well until his accident.

Now they have Eugene. A wrestler that is either playing a disabled wrestler with a disorder, or a real disabled wrestler.

Interesting, I would think a double leg amputee could wrestle quite well once they did the take down. I can't picture a take down that would work though but, there must be one...

During a bout of insomnia, I saw the one-legged WWE wrestler and he was very impressive.

If you follow the link I provided to Kyle Maynard's site, they have a video of one of his matches. You can see his takedown style - it's sort of bizarre, but it works.

From what i heard, he gets a two point lead to start (two points are earned for a takedown) and he starts from the bottom position.

To get a takedown, you not only need to bring your opponent to the ground, you also need to get control which most refs take to mean get behind them. Good job to them for trying, but the black guy Kyle wrestled looked like he was barely trying. On a sidenote, a local TKD competitor I know was disqualified because he was missing an arm and therefore unable to perform his poomse properly (He came in first and had the best technique but one of the losers instructors protested on the grounds that he had changed the form to be doable with one arm which was prohibitted in the competition). Later he won his sparring match against the student whose instructor had pitched a fit. :wink2:

It does not matter if you are missing a few body parts all you need is faith and heart.
