I too am a student of the Japanese Language. I utilize many different tools (websites, books, tapes, cds). The one I find most useful is Engrish (http://www.engrish.com) . As I find it difficult to make the sentences and words work, the Japanese have problems as well.

You may think you are learning Japanese, and making progress, but it is all an illusion. Look how I have turned out. A picture of me is attached for all to see. Look upon the fruits of my labours, ye mighty, and despair...

the part about the class mates, too true. When I took japanese, I took it because I thought it would be fun. The class started out with 30 people but windled down to about 8 people. The three categories are also true. There was this one girl who was crazy about anime and thought she was the best in the class. She got on my nerves fast. Then she would go around talking japanese to people who don't know the difference between a japanese person from a chinese person and her pronounciation made me cringe. AAAAAGHHH! Kind of a good thing the japanese teacher left. I took japanese for only one semester but despite the annoying class mates, it was pretty fun. Hiragana was easy to learn and so was katakana. We didn't even get to the Kanji.

What a gruesome and difficult task.Live in Japan or go to Monterey Language school. It is the most difficult thing in the world to do on one's own.
Glory be to anyone who can read, speak, understand and write Japanese in all its myriad ways.
I will never learn be able to embrace and learn "it".

I'm not even sure about that. My father in law did his mission in Japan for two years, and he barely knew it then or after.

I doubt if they will let a Gaijin live there over 90 days unless he has some special job, government, church, etc Correct me if I am wrong on this or what the new japanese Immigration rules are.

How about get a Japanese girlfriend?
When they speak coded or backwards it is like pidgeon English and my hair goes on end.
The easiest Japnese words for me to learn were the nouns relating to swear words like S**T or D**M IT!
Anatawa K**U Des(u). Never say: Watashiwa K**U des(u). But you better get the inflection right or you will be misunderstood.Even though you feel like it at times. With this approach in mind you will maybe get along with this and some hand gestures. HE! HE!HE!
Cheers.
I married a Japanese lady so wouldn't have to learn kanji! :wink2:
The language (BTW I loved that link, saiko desu!) is at the most basic, simple and logical (except everything's backward!).
Go beyond that and it becomes a bit of a nightmare, mostly because it's not a western language.
It's easier if you learned another language before you were 16.
With 8 years of learning Japanese full time under my belt I can say that site is correct to a T. You get to a point where studying japanese in english becomes impossible, the only way i can get by is by thinking japanese, eg. when i hear inu I dont think 'dog' I have an image of a dog. But now my English is terrible :(

You have inspired me to start learning Japanese again. I actually do find the language fairly easy to begin with, maybe I haven't gotten to the hard parts yet?
I'll get back to you all in about 8 or 9 years to let you know how it going.

Well, you guys motivated me.
I am starting Lesson 4 on Pimsleur's 20 lesson CD set. Once I get through those I am going to buy thier comprehensive set of 16 more discs. They have three levels of the comprehensive sets, Levels I, II, and III. Each one has 16 discs with two 30 minute lessons per disc. A little pricey but so far they are worth it.
So, Watashiwa nihongoga sukoshi wakarimas!
Any other tips on learning Japanese?
