Not sure if martial arts equipment, general martials arts, or karate forum is the best place to ask this question.

Is there a trick to tying "traditional" drawstring waist gi pants so they stay up?

Seems like no matter how I tie them, they keep sliding down. I have been in martial arts on and off for 10 years and still haven't learned the trick to keep them up. I used to think heavyweight gis were better than lightweight gis, but the heavyweight tend to slide down as the class goes on. Lately I have been using the "pro pant" from Century which have a lace up front and elastic waist, and I like those the best.

But if I have to wear traditional gi pants is there a method to keeping them from sliding from my waist to my hips?

In judogi's the drawstring of the pants completely encircle the waist and then hang out a bit more to be tied. I have seen people who have inserted the drawstring wrong causing the pants to fall no matter how hard you pull or tie the knot. Could this be the problem?

I had a particular brand gi where the pants did that because it was on the large side. So i took it to a tailor and had them insert an elastic waist with the drawstring...problem solved :karate:

Dennis,

All the gi pants I have had came with the drawstring already inserted, but they were as you described - encircle the waist with two ends at the front to tie.

Seems like regardless of the brand or weight (although lightweight seems worse), the pants will work loose as I work out.

Any special knots or other tricks?

Use a butcher's knot. Instead of looping the ends around each other once and then tying a bow, loop them three times before the bow.
