View Full Version : Sochin- Richard Kim Question
I saw on your site you trained directly under Shihan Richard Kim. From everything I've read by him and others, I developed a great admiration for him.
I saw you gat your sandan under him. Did you get to train with him directly? If so, I'd like to hear what it was like.
The training I did under his scrutiny was at seminars only. I was under another Sensei who started to leave Sensei Kim's organisation and I didn't want to follow him so the way it worked out, Sensei Kim accepted me as his personal student even tho I wasn't training with him except as seminars, since there was no one else near by to put me under...
Does that make sense? :)?
He was very interested in me personally because I wrote the book Canadian Law and Self Defence and gave him a copy. Unknown to me, he had my book evaluated by the martial arts college of the Eurotechnical Research Institute of Hawaii and they accepted it as a Masters level thesis. The only thing was by the rules of their program, that a Masters could only go to a Sandan or higher so he watched me thru my years (I always thought he was looking at me funny :)) and gave me the Master of Martial Science diploma with my Sandan certificate, just before he died.
The training lessened in physical vigor from 1986 to the late '90s tho his lectures remained strong. He seemed to be feeling his mortality and would teach us 3 empty hand kata and 2 weapons kata in one week-end. He taught 3-4 variations of every kata, the Okinawan version, the Japanese (Shotokan) version and the Chinese version and sometimes another variation he had liked. Few of us could assimilate what he poured forth.
Where are you in Colorado? We just bought land in South park (yes, the place the cartoon ws named after!) and we go to Animal's bbq every year in Castle Rock. We have business interests in Denver but don't go there much except to visit one friend and some family.
