View Full Version : Ma Brothers and Kuk Sool Hapkido in Chicago
Hello all,
Can anyone PM me with some information about the Ma Brothers and their Kuk Sool Hapkido group here in Chicago? They reportedly just closed their Chicago dojang, and some of the students have come in to my dojang to enquire...
Does anyone know lineage? Yes, it is relevant here. I am looking to find out where they would sit in our ranking structure...yep, I want an idea BEFORE I see them train.
I have HEARD both positive and very negative things about this group, can anyone shed some light?
SO as to not violate the rules, PM only please.
Thank you.
Hello iron_ox,
I really don't know much about the MA Brothers but a good friend of mine train under their system. Some time ago.
If I’m not mistaken he told me that they use only a 5 belt system:
White, Yellow, Blue, Red, and Black.
And the story I heard was that they were Kook Sool Won but had a falling out and started there own stile of Hapkido called Kook Sool Hapkido and that they are accredited by the Kido Hae under Grandmaster In Sun Seo.
My friend trains now at my school and he is a great Hapkido practitioner. I have a lot of respect for his techniques.
This is just my two cents.
Thank you for your time

The Daehan Kidohwe is no longer under the control the Master Seo and has not been for several years. Master Kim Jong Sung is the President of the Kidohwe. Here is a picture of him at http://www.hapkidoselfdefense.com/image00004.jpg. Now, Master Seo runs a group called the World Kido Federation; it is not affiliated with the one in Korea and is a private organization in the US. They are completely different. I am affiliated with the Daekan Kidohwe, not the private one. If you like information about the world kido group, Master Timmerman of this forum could shed some light for you.

Hello Master Hilland,
I apologize for my mistake. I was not aware that Master Seo was not in charge of the Kido Hae. Thank you for correcting me. I just wrote what I remember what my friend told me about the MA Brothers.
I did not want to disrespect any one.
I'm looking forward to see you in Jackson in a few weeks.
Have a good one.

Hello Jere:
Sorry for not posting for a while, but this time of year I am on the road teaching wherever demand takes me lol. Just returned a few minutes ago from doing a seminar at the Arnold... it was a blast reminiscing with old compadres like Bill Wallace and Jim Harrisson.
I have know about the Mah brothers for a long time, and they were at one time with the Kuk Sool organization. As far as I know, they split from Kuk Sool a long time ago (around the 70's) with quite a few other masters. To my knowledge, they did not found Kuk Sool Hap Ki Do, as that already existed way before then. I think they went just independent.
See you all in Jackson next weekend:)
