I'm trying to make my own style for myself and am going to organize it into a formal thing like the other martial arts. This MA would continually change and improve until I myself am a master of the martial arts this style would take from. This style would involve training of "Spiritual Energy".
anyway what would be a short MA like name for a martial arts that involves spiritual energy and special techniques that use this as a booster of the fighter's mood, confidence, and power.
also, can i get some lists of short words in the japanese and in their english form that might be used in the name of this martial art or any other?
thnx

My advise...

Dont.

Dont even try.

Drop it from your mind.

Distance yourself from the idea.

Dont just walk, RUN away from the thought.

Dont bother even to consider it.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Now that weve settled that... Go study.

Alot

Several years. At least 10. In a few arts. 10 years each. Minimum. Minimum!

Once youve got about 40 to 50 years of study under your belt(s), if you still want to make up your own art, have at it. If you need a name, youll have a few decades worth of experience to look back on and find something decent.

Take Sgathak's advise. The more you learn, the more you realize you still have a lot more to learn.

Wait a minute...

Everyone took this seriously...

It wasn't a parody?!

...oh, the grammar and punctuation...he didn't mention "soke" or other cliches. God, he IS serious, isn't he!

Fire all teachers; they're failing. (Can't fire parents, can we...)

"you have failed to follow the rules concerning entering your Full Real Name (first and last) in the Full Real Name field during your registration. Instead, you have entered just a first name, a couple of initials or other such nonsense. We take our rules here seriously and most of our member have been more than happy to comply with them."

Done.

FWIW, that info WAS in my signature, but the update was painless and the policy absolutely worthwhile. Poor aikidojournal.com's boards tanked for lack of this accountability.

Thanks for being on it.

Don, no drama, we updated our rules from real name in the sig line to the profile for consistency... once we get everyone on board, it wont be an issue anymore. Just too much hassle trying to keep people playing by the rules, ya know?

Bluninja... "for yourself" dont mean nuttin. Sorry. If its just for yourself, does sit need a name? Call it "made it up" or hell... just call it bluninja style. Why not? You dont plan on teaching it do you? I would hope not. You dont plan on telling your friends about it do you? I hope not. And if not... who cares?

Just keep going to the dojo, learn from someone who knows more than you do... and get good at that. When your good enough to try and codify your own system (make your own) youll have a good 40 to 50 years of study (NO LESS!!!! If someone claims to have made up their own system and arnt about 60 years old.... they are not worth your time! PERIOD!).

Bottom line is, your not ready to "make up your own", and doing so now will just be for fun anyway right?

it's like how everyone has their own little variations from what they've learned. well often atleast. i just want some short japanese words and their english meanings and maybe how to fit them together to make sense.

Sgathak
03-13-2005, 12:00
Your not ready for your own "variations".... Learn the art your teacher is teaching FIRST.

Japanese isnt like English... you cant just make something "sound cool". Youll just end up sounding like a jerk.

I repeat - this is a BAD IDEA!

We were humouring you, but for us to encourage you in this endeavor is ludicrous and probably going to be very disappointing to you, there's a lot of wisdom and experience on this forum that is being communicated to you in good faith. Maybe this thread should be listed under "Chat and fun stuff". Ben, we're only trying to enlighten you :D

spamful.
i tried looking for online dictionaries.
they dont give detailed definitions.
i got...

spiritual - shinkouteki, supirituaru, mukei
Warrior - musho, joufu, tsuwamono, buke, samurai, masurao
style - kata

 now i would appreciate it if certain people here would go away and get a life instead of being worthless and negative.
or better yet, walk 3-6 steps outside your front door, take 2 steps right or left, lay on the grass, roll around in some dog droppings, return to where you were when you first layed on the grass, and die. if you don't live in a home where this command is applicable, such as a condo, then just go outside and jump into a garbage truck.

That's because there is no straight word-for-word translation possible from Japanese to English. The languages are based on different concepts and any translation is an approximation at best.

You started out with a foolish request. You were given good advice to leave it behind and take the right path to where you should go. You ignored it and persisted in your foolish quest. Once is uneducated, twice is stupid. Now you start with ridiculous insults. It might be better for you to consider the words of Pres. Abraham Lincoln: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Yup... and to repeat myself from an earlier post "Japanese isnt like English... ". Mr Bluninja, after your search for words came up dry, does it make ANY more sense why people didnt want to give you words? You cant do a direct tranlastion and have it work right!

I agree with all of the above. Especially "You were given good advice to leave it behind and take the right path to where you should go. You ignored it and persisted in your foolish quest. Once is uneducated, twice is stupid."

Bluninja, Id advise you to drop the childishness. For someone who wants to make an art with an emphasis on spiritual development, is telling someone to go roll in dog crap *really* the most enlightened behavior?

You are skipping the body of the book and trying to get the full meaning by reading the first few pages and the back cover. Read the book, that is...experience the trainning available. Keep your personal style personal. We all personalize what we learn and experience through MA and if you study and practice with due dilligence, several recognized and formal styles of fighting, perhaps in 3 to 5 decades you may have a complete fighting style worthy of passing on. Until then, with all the respect you are due, let it go, or you will get more ridiculous names like "young-fu". But keep your dream...

Sincerely,

Sgathak

15 may still be a legal child, but its old enough to know when its appropriate to act the fool and when not to. I know 15 year old Mothers and Fathers... its nearly old enough to be given charge of a 2 ton weapon (car)... but hey, 15 still a child right?

Lay off the kid? Whatever. Didnt think he was getting all that rough a time. Being told its a dumb idea when its a dumb idea isnt exactly cruel. What would be, however, is feeding the non-sense. And quite frankly Mandeigh, I think you know that.

Now, Im not telling the kid dont do it.. just dont do it NOW. Learn something first!

Maybe if Blueninja would go to the ILMA board then he would get the answer he's looking for . Their in full support of kids forming their own style . As a matter of fact there was a kid there , the same age as him , that founded his own style , & they supported it . Maybe the 2 kids could form their own sokeship council , like the rest of the fools , & recognize eachother . I know the other kid started his own association , & everything . So maybe he can help him out , & recognize him , as well . You know the guys from the ILMA started their own associations too , & for a few bucks you can get certified by them , as well . Go for it ! I met one of the guys I think about 1 1/2 ago , he claimed a 6th Dan at the time , now he's going around promoting people from 6th Dan to 8th Dan himself , w/o even seeing the person , never mind he himself was only claiming a 6th Dan . This guy didnt even move like a yellow belt to me , but , yet had the nerve to knock my style . Blueninja , back when I was 15yo , I too wanted to start my own style . I already trained 10 yrs by then , I thought I knew it all . Today , I'm 32 yo , & have been training 27 yrs , I am here to tell you , I still have much to learn , & feel I am just now getting comfortable at the rank I've had for the last 5 years (Yon Dan-4th Degree Black Belt) , & could care less about promotion . As long as I can keep going back to Okinawa , & when I start teaching again they allow me to bring my students , & I can get them certified from Okinawa , then thats what matters to me . Maybe 15 years from now , if I have somone thats ready for 3rd or 4th Dan , then I might seek promotion , but untill then , I'm happy where I'm at , there's no need for another piece of paper on my wall .
