My name is Roger and I have studied Daito-Ryu, Yoshinkan Aikido and Ki-Aikido. I am considering studying Hapkido here in the Pittsburgh area. I wanted to know from a practitioner if Hapkido, since it derives from Daito-Ryu, still uses the principles of "aiki". i.e. aiki-no-jutsu throws manifesting aiki through small circle dynamic body movements from wrist or other body part grabs designed to capture, off-balance and throw. Please respond to me at my e-mail adress-RRigoli59@hotmail.com in addition to this forum. Thank you so much.

Sorry, this isn't a response to your question, but where are you going to study hapkido in Pittsburgh?

Greetings,

Yes to all your questions, however Hapkido tends to be much more direct and to the point than Aikido.

Make sure you get a competant HKD teacher who actually specializes in it as opposed to TKD school where only bits and pieces are taught in many cases.

Hey Rog,

Hapkido, and Daito-ryu are similar, and depending on the instructor, you may never see any difference except for the fact that you will see kicks during warm-ups. Also there are many more kick defense's in Hapkido.
