Hello, long time lurker first time poster here. I have a question for you jujutsu / judo guys: Any suggestions on good gi (somewhat reasonably priced  ) that you folks have found to hold up in your experiences ?

I am also conerned about the sizing charts I see on some manufacturers websites, in that the height / weights listed for their sizes are VASTLY out of line for myself. I am an extremely stocky individual (5'10" and 290lbs-and yes, quitting smoking has contributed to that weight,as well as giving me a gut  ). Anyone have any ideas on what sizes might work ?

And yes, if the previous questions didn't give it away, I am a n00b :D

Thank you,

Dustin

Don't look at me. I have five of the $35 cheap white judo dogi that I get through Robert's connections at Century. At least one of them is ready for retirement. They do the job. The oldest one is over three years old and still serviceable, if a bit holey.

Oh, and you would probably be a 7 in the dogi that I wear, although you would have to hem the pants and arms back quite a bit if you are 5'10".

My guess is a size 5 pants and size 6 jacket from Howard (HCK). I have two HCK (lightest weight and the next weight up) and they work great for me.

Gameness is also quite good but rather tight around the body. It's for skinny people (I barely fit, myself!)

Good luck.

First things first.
Are you looking for a judo keikogi or lightweight karate keikogi?

Next, you need to take some measurements; waist, shoulder breadth and waist to throat. After that, you can see what makes a match!

Well, it would be a judo / jujutsu gi, that's why I asked you guys :t2:

Thank you for your valuable input gentleman, I was able to talk to sensei tonight, and he basically agreed with Rasputin's thoughts : That he has nice double weave gi and single weave gi, and in his experience they hold together about the same. So why not spend the lesser amount ?

Anyways, I am letting him order mine for me, bowing to his superior knowledge

Thanks again

~Dustin

Okay...you want a judo uwagi or judogi (that's uwagi and zubon). There is really no such thing as a "jujutsu gi"; unless you count what the BJJ call a "kimono"- which is really more like a heavy karate uwagi (never "gi").

I bought a Mizuno about 10 years ago and after hard use, it still is going strong. My HSU is pretty good too. They will outlast anything by Century in the long run. I would spend the money if you plan on staying with it.

Size 7 is going to be long on you from the waist to the legs and the sleeves are going to be broad/long, as they don't account for height. The zubon (pants) are going to be long as well. Get ready to take it in for some hemming unless you can get them to do it.

Keep that in mind.

Well, it would be a judo / jujutsu gi, that's why I asked you guys :t2:

I agree that a size 7 will be too long in the arms and legs--as I noted above, it will require some heavy-duty hemming of both. However, as a man with a keg where others keep their six-pack, I hear 290 lbs and 5'10" and, unless Dustin is made of solid aluminium, he probably has a lot up front to try and close a gi across. I wear a size 6 and it is starting to have a bit of trouble closing in the front (so long, Carbs), and I am 6'2" and 250. Therefore, size 7 is the smallest I can see fitting in the top for him.

As DCG is almost certainly new to the world of jujutsu, and we do have about an 80-90% attrition rate, I still suggest buying the cheap <$50 uniform until he has stuck with it for a year or so and decided to stay.

Good luck and let us know what you end up with (size and brand)!

This is true. It might be thrifty to check and see how much altering might cost. In the end, unless you really don't mind the length, it may be cheaper to get something custom fit.

I have had good luck in talking to the Mizuno people (Frank Hatashita's company over in the USA) about alteratons, and they do offer semi-inexpensive Uwagi:

You also need to ask yourself some questions, or at least consider them before ordering. What is your main use going to be? IF Judo, are you going to compete a lot. If some form of gendai jujutsu, are you going to compete a lot or do you do a lot of pulling pushing with hands gripping the lapel or other parts of the uwagi?

If any of the questions are yes, you do need to consider "how much is a lot?" Mizuno will take special orders as will many others, and I have the same problems in a much shorter body, but if the answer is 'no' to those questions, Mizuno makes a great single weave and it isn't priced out of this world. Roughly, between the double and single weave, the price will double or be cut in half depending on which way you go.

The shitagi (Pants) you can alter yourself, or have someone you know do it. Your main problem will be in where the knee pads are, at, above or below the knee. In tachi waza, that probably isn't a consideration but if you are going to be doing a lot of newaza, it may be. The pants generally are made to fit many sizes, the legs at the top are wide, the waist band is fully adjustable and they generally are cut low in the crotch, so which way you dress shouldn't matter.;)

This you may want to consider. It may cost a bit more to special order but you won't be sorry. I made the mistake of ordering based on a previous size and it just didn't work out, so I had to have one made with certain measurements. Before my older judogi shrunk in the closet, I had them for twenty odd years with the only patch job just above the knee pad on one side of the pants.

Consider belt sizes, too. There are generally two sizes of width, regular, which is about 1 1/2 in. and three inches. In Mizuno obi, the obi that comes with the dogi is much longer than that of three inches. IOW, a size three narrow has at least six inches on the length over the wide obi. Take it into consideration. You may have to order that in a larger size than the uwagi.

Just for the record, a Shitagi is usually an undershirt or underwear, generally for Kimono. I have no idea why this came to be known as pants - up and down I guess.
