Anyone have a favorite escape from being knee mounted?

I usually try to put my far elbow on their knee, buck up and out and push the knee, then wrap my arm around the leg, go to my knees, and drive a takedown. My inside arm is usually defending my collar during this.

That is the highest percentage move for me. The biggest problem I have is when I bump them they move around my head and go to the other side then you have to start all over.

No kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!! Arrrrrggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's exactly the problem. It drives me nuts!

I wonder if there is a solid way to get that leg, the one that's in contact, pushed out and snared into half-guard. I can get that by accident but not against someone who can pivot around like you described.

I have seen a guy come right up to a rear-naked (Mata Leon) but, well, he wrestled at Olympic trials when he was 18 and can do things normal people simply cannot.

I agree with Cliff. Even if I can work my way to half-guard, I'd rather be sitting out into a takedown/reversal. If anything, I'd prefer to let the guy get the mount than sit there in knee-on-belly. I freaking hate being under that. It's like when someone with a really good ride gets on you, it's hard to keep from spazzing out just to get him off.

I've had a lot of sucess just re guarding as you would side control. By placing both hands on the knee that is on the stomach (attempt to push the knee to the ground as well, turning on your side facing them, and bringing your elbow touching your knee that is closest to them(causing them to go outside of your body frame) and slide back into guard. You will always run the chance of them switching sides, just keep fighting and make them constantly change positions. As soon as possible hook a leg and start bringing yourself back into guard.
Another escape is place your hand that's closest to them on their outstretched leg. Grab the belt in the front with the other hand (or with no gi, place your hand in their stomach). Push with both arms and turn on your side to face them while scooting your hips away. Take your hand that's on their leg away and post it on the ground behind you. Quickly move to your knees. With the hand that was posted on the ground reach around their heel of the leg that was on your stomach. Push with the hand that is still holding their belt as you sweep the foot out from them.

Both hands push on his knee, shrimp to the open side and push the knee off and down toward your feet. Important to go toward your feet and not straight into him to minimize the chance of a classic spinning armlock or stepover kimura on your farside arm. This is the core tactic that I use but it depends on how good the guy's knee ride is.

If I want to bait them, I might just turn away and go to my knees and take my chances at reversing when he scrambles for my back.

Matt Thornton uses what he calls a Rolling Pin Knee Ride that makes most people tap just from the pin. It just plain SUCKS!

What Fletch said, although they are all good.

I would like to add a word of caution for those using knee-on-chest: I have been using that position to get submissions for awhile. I found out real quick to be careful when I accidentally did something not too good to my partner's sternum. Be careful when you plant the knee, pull up on pants and arm, and obtain good posture. With the knee on the sternum you may separate something.

I learned a cool sweep/reversal while at Pittman's in Lubbock. Say your opponent has knee on the right side of your chest (his right knee). post both hands to his abdomen and hip (to keep him still) and bring your far knee (left in this example) up into his bum or groin if you can, lift a little with your knee while pushing with your posted hands and start the reversal to your left side and onto his back... you should end up in his cross mount or some variation depending on his response. Ive had to drill this, it seems the bat choke is really popular right now, and its such a flashy move I hate getting tapped with it. Let me know what you think. Its a little clumsy at first, but if you drill it with a partner pre training time, it gets more fluid. They usually dont expect it, think your just panicking and wait. Worse case scenario: they can try to go around your head, but your already almost rolled over completely to go face to face with him once he takes his knee off, or if he sprawls onto your arms you can kinda do a wrestler shoulder pop- get your head out and take his back.
