Classical Nihon Jujutsu Seminar
Takamura ha Shindo Yoshin Ryu

Toby Threadgill Sensei and Tony Alvarez Sensei April 29–May 1, 2005

The Shoshinkan Dojo of Austin, Texas, in cooperation with Kim Soo Martial Arts, will host an open seminar on classical nihon jujutsu taught by Toby Threadgill Sensei, Kaicho of Takamura ha Shindo Yoshin Ryu. Included will be a tameshigiri sword cutting clinic taught by Tony Alvarez Sensei.

The seminar will cover the principles of jujutsu and how they evolved from sword application. Instruction will begin with unarmed jujutsu techniques covering a range of application from strikes to grappling to throws. Focus will then shift to armed application as participants explore principles in body movement while performing techniques with a wooden sword (bokken). Techniques will then increase in difficulty from sword-against-sword to unarmed-against-sword situations. Participants will be able to appreciate the differing degrees of sophistication in the principles of body movement as applied to technique. In looking back from sword techniques to unarmed jujutsu it will become clear that "the cut is the strike is the throw".

Finally, the seminar will conclude with a clinic on cutting based on sword draws from Takamura ha Shindo Yoshin Ryu, where participants will experience first hand the importance of having discipline in both posture and body movement. Six mats will be included in the price for those paying for full instruction on cutting technique. For those interested in getting guidance in proper cutting technique while using a wooden sword, there is a reduced price with the option to separately purchase a mat at the door should you so choose to practice a true cut.
