Those who are interested in some of the contemporary aspects of Japanese culture may find the most recent edition of the NY Times Magazine a fun read.
Online version is at: NY Times Mag (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/magazine/index.html). Though you have to sign up to view, it doesn't cost anything and they won't send you spam if you don't want it. Otherwise you could buy the magazine at newsstand.
Among the articles:
1. A discussion of Murakami Takashi, who is a very interesting artist. He draws upon many influences, one of which is ukiyo-e. Had a friend in grad school who wrote a great paper about him a few years ago.
2. Some girls around Tokyo ready to be imprinted with your own meaning.
3. A close and personal look at Lawson's in the food section!
