From the Daily Mail, a scientific development that suggests people could grow bulletproof skin. Or possibly have bulletproofing added to their skin. Or possibly just be parted with their money for phoney protection from harm, which will just end up with people using more powerful rounds. Or is it just silly season in the newspaper.

We are charging just enough to pay for the room. If we get a lot of people, we may be able to give back some of the money to those coming.

This is mainly to just give us a chance to get a sense of closure. Despite the fact that Rich and I will be the main teachers, others will be allowed to step up, tell a story about Oguri sensei and show something they learned from him.

I know the furor over SOPA. But it seems that ACTA is just about as bad, maybe worse, and is under the radar for some reason.

As I understand it, it is a treaty between nations and some senators are trying to get it to be voted on for approval as the constitution demands. But President Obama is taking the stance that he does not have to get the senate to approve it.

Any additional information on it, and it's progress towards implementation, would be appreciated.

In the above blog (as well as from a bunch of other talking heads and his main adversary), Newt Gingrich is getting a lot of flak for suggesting a permanently inhabited moon base could be constructed within 8 years (by the end of his second term as he put it). The idea is portrayed as ridiculous, too expensive, and too difficult.

Yet, when I heard about it, I had to think - when Kennedy announced that "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard..." the technology to do that didn't exist except possibly on the (quite literal) drawing board. We all know how it went, and how much scientific, technological, and economic benefit came out of the moon missions.

Suppose the next US president manages to not get entangled in two trillion-dollar conflicts with few benefits on the bottom line, or force a really expensive and poorly researched welfare reform down the collective throats of American businesses and taxpayers. Perhaps some of the savings could be put towards space exploration, instead of making extra payments on the debts to the Chinese?

On the other hand, I guess a bunch of big and shiny new homes could be built instead, as Romney countered.

I can't speak for anyone else, but in my mind moon bases beat McMansions any day of the week. Besides, Stephen Hawking stated, as early as 2006, that for a number of reasons we'd better get settlements started on other planets, and the sooner the better. I think it's a safe bet to say he's more intelligent than anyone in the federal government.

State of the Union

it's almost time for me to refrain from commenting on US politics..I don't say anything during the election but before I do some thoughts from last night's State of the Union.
