Physical Requirements for LEO's
My daughter's boyfriend is a criminal justice major in college. He wonders what are the requirements as far as vision, he wears glasses, and fitness, in general for law enforcement agencies, say local/state/federal. Any info is appreciated. Also if a person was interested in working in law enforcement, but not on the street, but say in investigations into computer crime, online pedophiles, etc. what advice can you give for him to prepare for such a career. Thank You!
Peace

I can't speak for all the states, but here there is no minimal requirement for any police departments.
Big problem. So as long as a persaon shows improvement and participates they will pass.
If your son is in relative good shape he shouldn't have a problem. If he wants to guage himself use the military standards for his age group.Fr example a male between the ages of 17-28 may be required to run a 1 1/2 miles in 13 minutes or less, 34 pushups in 2 minutes, and 45 situps in 2 minutes.
Most agencies here accept corrective 20/20. So glasses are ok.
As far as getting into a specialized unit he first has to apply with the agencies that have those units (not all do) and then work his way into it.
For example we have a county agency here that does internet cromes, specifically, pedophiles. He would first have to go to the academy amd possibly do a couple months on the road.
If he has a computor degree or backgoround, it does help.
If he applies to the U.S. Customs Service, for example, once he graduates their academy he can then go directly into that unit, since they are an investigative agency.
His best bet is to find out what the agencies have to offer and their requirements.
Just some examples. Hope that helps and good luck.
If you want to discuss it more in detail, PM me or email me (if you still have my email) and I'll be more than happy to help in anyway I can.Last edited by TonyU; 05-09-2005 at 20:35.

Again I can't speak for all agencies, however most agencies do require you to have corrective 20/20 vision. Most police depts. will automatically start you out on the street after being certified, however at most sheriff office's you will start out working in the jail and work your way out. He needs to get a specific degree in whatever field he wants to pursue and try to get as high as a degree as possible, that will help out his chances when they look at positions within the department. Most of the time people are promoted from within so he will have to pay some dues and work his way up for the most part.
