Default The Official BudoSeek! Kata/Hyung Resource Page

Over the past couple of days, I have been contemplating putting together a one-stop kata resource for everyone. The idea is to list, by type of art and ryu, ryuha, kwon, etc., resources on the internet such as videos, charts, photo and the like. Once completed, this will be located in the Articles section, or another appropriate location in a format that will make it easy to find kata/hyung for a particular art and ryu/kwon.

Needless to say, this will be a big project! With that in mind, I would like to ask everyone for their help in locating kata/hyung resources. So here is what you can do.

If you know of a good kata resource, just reply in this thread and provide me with the following information:

    Art/Style, Ryu or Kwon
Type of Resource: Video, chart, other (please specify)
URL: A complete link to the website.

With regard to videos, I want links to sites with COMPLETE videos of the kata/hyung, not some little snippet that might be just used for advertising someone's video or DVD they have for sale.

Anyway, with your assistance, we can make this resource happen and I am looking forward to everyone response.

    Thanks!

    Isshinryu Karate
1966 video of Tatsuo Shimabuku (only resource I've been able to find)
Open hand kata: Seisan, Seiuchin, Naihanchin, Wansu, Chinto, Kusanku, Sunsu
    Weapons kata:
Bo: Tokameni no kun, Urashi no kun, Shi Shi No Kun No Dai
Sai: Kusanku Sai, Chatan Yara No Sai

The only problem with the videos is that they are of Shimabuku in an unfamiliar setting. He doesn't know that the camera can move, so he changes his movements a little, the kata are toned down from what they would actually look like, and there have been a few changes since he made the videos. You would need to at least know the kata you wanted to view. If you had forgotten pieces, they would be an opportunity to pick those back up, but they would not be good to learn the kata from scratch.

Thanks for the input Daniel and Richard. I am a little disappointed that I have not got a few more responses (how about a little help here Gene and Tony?). Anyway, I will keep this thread alive for a while to give it time to build some good resources.

I will look for some judo kata, but most that I have seen are just clips to sell tapes.

Try going to http://alltheweb.com, choose video and type in the name of the form you want. I know for Tae Kwan Do forms they're almost all there. You could even just try typing in kata or hyung.

Same with our katas. I'll loook though. Ours are on video and are for purchases only. I don't have the authority to put on a website.

    Here's a link for Nage-No-Kata and Katame-No-Kata.

The videos are shown one technique at a time, you need to select the technique to view it. Also only one side is shown in Nage, in an actual demo, you do both left and right sides. You also need to install the DIVX program to view them.

It does not matter if you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involving martial arts - your enemies will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around in a threatening manner until you have knocked out their predecessors.

Daniel linked some great TKD videos. As far as step by step descriptions, www.paperwindow.com/tkd has just about every TKD form covered, and I believe some Shotokan ones too.

If someone has a place to host them, I've got demos of most of the siniwali patterns I've recorded for Hochheim's Archipelago offshoot of Modern Arnis.

Hi, and thanks for a great thread! Some great sites have been posted already. I will list my own site, concentrating primarily on wado ryu karate. However, I know some kata that are not traditional wado (Gojushiho Sho, Annan) which I believe exist in Shito.

What about links to the throws on judoinfo.com?

That's open-sourced (if you link to it, not copy it), pretty complete, and quite well shot.

I'm not sure this is the kind of kata that you're after, Robert, but for Judo and other Japanese throwing arts, maybe it would help?
I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.

    http://www.natkd.com/tkd_forms.htm

Almost every single empty hand form in the TKD style. Keep in mind that the black belt forms for the tae guk and palgwe series (starting with Koryo to Il Yo) are essentially the same. The other series are from different kwons.

EDIT: I'd thought I'd also add that there is different terminology for the word form. This is what I've heard over the years:

    Hyung - Korean for form
Poomse - another Korean word for form
Tuls - yet another Korean word for form
Anyo - word for form in some Philipino styles
Kata - Japanese for form. Most commonly used term in MMA

This something that I've been meaning to post about in the TKD forum, but never got around to doing it. The form Tae Geuk I Jong seems to have several meanings. In my school the meaning of the form is "Joy and Happiness". Others think it has the same meaning as it's sister form Palgwe I Jong, which is "Lake". But I've also seen people say that it means "Strength of Mind".

    Just something I've noticed.

The following site contains complete videos of kata from various Goju Ryu/kai and Shito Ryu/kai practitioners. You can expect to see almost every Goju kata and many Shito kata.

It also includes numerous weapons kata from different Okinawan kobudo schools:

This site includes other written resources too.
