What Korean art do you practice or have practiced?
What Korean art do you train in or have trained in? You can select multiple arts. If you choose "other" please explain. I didnt include every variation of the korean arts..sorry if I left anybody out.
I teach and train in taekwondo and hapkido. I have had limited experience in ship pal gi, which is Korean kung fu. I have always wanted to try yudo but could never find a dojang in my area.Last edited by moogong; 10-12-2005 at 17:41.

Kuk Sool Won was interesting but too "artsy" for me. Too much emphasis on forms/katas and not enough on competitive training.
But a cool MA, that's for sure, with some nice people in it.I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.

"Yudo" is just the Korean pronounciation of Japanese judo. They got the same chinese characters. Even in Korea most people know that yudo was from Japan.
However, if they are indeed different, what are the differences?Last edited by KudaraTaekwon; 10-13-2005 at 22:13.

Yudo focuses on the self defense aspect of the art whereas some Judo may focus on the competition aspect.

Missing option: taekkyeon
And what about the art of 'eating kimchi'..???
-

I don't think taekkyon is available in North America yet. Not in Toronto at least.

And eating kimchi, it's an acquired taste. I find that westerners either love it or hate it.Last edited by KudaraTaekwon; 10-15-2005 at 17:06.

Oom Yung Do...has anyone heard of this? When I was in San Diego, there were two schools which seemed to open within 6 months of each other. I forget the name of the creator, but the art claims to incorporate 8 different martial arts (kung fu, jujitsu, aikido/hapkido (wtf?), taekwondo, tai chi, kendo, ba gua, ship pal gae (?)) into one. I took an intro lesson and this just made absolutely no sense to me. It would be very hard to incorporate all of these into a lesson less than 4 hours long. I don't even know if I can call it a Korean art, but a guy from Korea created it after apparently studying all these 8 arts for a long time. I'm not trying to style bash, but has anyone heard of this or know anything about it?

I have chosen TKD, although I have trained just 2 classes. Our Shotokan Sensei was out of town and a TKD instructor filled in for him. We trained more like in their style and it was just awesome.

Doug, I don't want to derail the thread but there are some well documented horror stories regarding Oom Yung Do. I would suggest you google it. It is not a matter of if the style is effective but rather their scary business tactics.

I would say it very much is a matter of its effectiveness. I've seen alot of testimonials about how good it is for health, but if it incorporates all these arts, shouldn't have some effectiveness? I guess no one here practices it..that may be a sign.

Actually, the issues with effectivness are not what I am speaking of. Google the style and read what ex-OYD students have to say about the founder and the business operations.

Doug,
I searched through some of the older threads and came up with this:

There are probably more, but this is what I came up with so far.Last edited by Eliz; 10-24-2005 at 00:56.

I studied a couple of months on and off in Tae Kwon Do, but I have trained continuously for 17 years in my teacher's version of Tang Soo Do.

I trained TKD many, many moons ago.
It sucked, no realistic training for me and no understanding of the concept of forms IMO.
But it was the school and instructor, so I left and the rest as they say is history."I don't lift, too heavy. I don't run, too far. I just hit people.
