Default David Lee Roth (Van Halen lead singer)

Our local radio station will be featruing the former lead singer of Van Halen,David Lee Roth, on a new radio program replacing Howard Stern. In a bio I read it mentioned that he often mentions his Martial Arts training. Ive heard he is adept at a couple of Kung Fu Styles. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Eh I heard he spent some time with Paulie Zink & Benny Urquidez among other people... nothing I would call "adept" but picked up bits & pieces from here & there to go with his ADD & natural athleticism.

He did an interview with a local magazine and he mentioned he was now training in bjj. He didnt mention anything about his rank or instructor.

I remember reading an interview with David Lee Roth in "Hit Parader" (I think) back around 1984 or so. I was interested because Van Halen was my favorite band at the time, and they had just made the video for the song "Jump," which had David Lee Roth performing a jump spinning kick on stage. I do remember him mentioning some type of martial art he had studied, but I am at a loss at to what it was..

I once remeber seeing somthing on VH1, in which David Lee Roth cut his face open doing a chinese broadsword form in the middle of a cocert ( iguess it was part of the act? ) But in the show it mentioned that he trained in wushu. Right or wrong that's what I remeber

Well, while on patrol I tuned in to his radio show, and I can tell you it was so bad I couldn't stand to listen to it more than 10 minutes.

A year or two ago(or might have been even longer) I came across an internet clip of him performing an iaido waza, think it was Mae. Seem to recall it was pretty passable, dunno who his teacher was though.

It was real...(not part of the act), and he screwed up.
    Took 20 or so stitches.

    As for his radio show...
I give him 6 months. He's way too stuck on himself.

I haven't heard his show, so I can't really comment on him, but I find it hard to believe he is more stuck on himself than Stern is. You should be used to it...

He did train under Paulie Zink in Ta Sheng Pek Kwar. He was actually under Zink for fifteen years. Of course this wasn't continuous training, and Zink is a pretty controversial fellow. Zink also trained Joe Walsh, for all that's worth.

2 years ago he performed with the Boston Pops for the 4th of July Fireworks show on the Charles River Esplanade. He did some jump kicks (tried) and made an extremely embarassing attempt at using a staff as part of his act. I don't know anything about his training except what I read here and saw that night. I can say with all seriousness that it was embarassing to watch.
