I made out pretty well on the book front for Christmas. Here's my new reading list:
Global Brain: The Evolution of Mass Mind From the Big Bang to the 21st Century by Howard Bloom(Amazon link) ties together concepts from evolutionary biology, psychology, and cybernetics. Very well written.
Don't Know Much About The Bible: Everything You Need to Know About The Good Book But Never Learned by Kenneth Davis (Amazon link) I've enjoyed Davis's earlier books, and so far this one seems as good as the others.
The Assassins' Gate: America In Iraq by George Packer (Amazon link) This has gotten good reviews and I'm looking forward to starting it tonight.Tony Dismukes

Is this a new one? I guess my good friend Google could tell me, so I'll go check.

I just got a new book which has jumped to the front of my reading list:
The Limits of Expertise: Rethinking Pilot Error and the Causes of Airline Accidents by R. Key Dismukes, Benjamin A. Berman, and Loukia D. Loukopoulos (publisher link)
The topic wouldn't normally be one of my major fascinations, but the fact that my Dad is the lead author kind of makes it more interesting.

I just finished this one. Found it pretty disturbing. But he's a good writer.

"Genghis Khan and the making of the modern world" by Jack Weatherford.
I thought I'd be bored but it was quite well written. I liked it."do good when you are able, and when you are unable, maintain goodwill" chinese proverb

I just finished Hollywood Station by Joseph Wambaugh.
Good book. So much so I'm going to read his earlier works."I don't lift, too heavy. I don't run, too far. I just hit people.

I just picked up Nestor Capoeira's Capoeira: A Street Smart Song, and found it to be an interesting read. It's a bit dated, being originally written between 1979 and 1985, but it's a good read for an advanced student of capoeira. More than his other books it examines the place a traditional martial art, like capoeira, has in a modern society. What lessons the martial art can offer us outside of basic physical skills, and what dangers it faces, as an art, in the modern world.
The section on the capoeira roda as a "symbol-made-manifest" are especially interesting, I thought.-Dan Maloy

Yeah, I was aware of them, but not his writing style as I never read his books before. Now that I have, I am going to read them.

The first three are fiction loosely based on his experiences as an LAPD officer. The Onion Field and Lines and Shadows are true stories.

Gracie Submission Essentials by Helio and Royler Gracie. One of the coolest things about the Gracie books is they always showcase key details in submissions I have trouble with.

Thanks Tony & Cliff.
Brian, I read that "heaven and earth" book and used tiger balm (no joke) to "treat" the cold symptoms of my host-sister when I was living in Germany.
It actually worked. She had 8 symptoms (if I remember) and the book only covered 7. All 7 went away within 30 minutes but the 8th was still bothering her.
I was amazed both by the medicine and by the fact that I touched something/someone without breaking it/her.
I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.
