    big grin More More Drills - The 3 Punch Drill

    Karate Drill –Simple Exercise - Moving Basics.

    1)Teacher selects a stance. Example Sanchin Dachi.

    2)Have students step either ,forward ,backward or turn on teacher's random command. Practice this for a bit correcting basics as necessary.

    3)Teacher selects 3 techniques example 1.Age Uke 2. Furi Uchi 3. Shuto uchi….or it could be something really simple like 1 JoDan punch 2. ChuDan Punch 3. GeDan Punch

    4)Have student practice the 3 techniques you chose from a static stance in sequential order repeating the cycle until you decide to stop.

    5)Have students step either ,forward ,backward or turn on teacher's random command as in Step 2 while performing the 3 techniques sequence you chose. The stepping is random the technique sequence is not.

    6) WORK.....

    It is Kihon Practice that also trains the mind to react in ways that normal moving basics practice does not. Benefits all experience levels as long as you are not the guy calling the directions you working your mental reaction processes.

    That is a good drill. I'm going to work that in next trip to one of my students' dojo.

    Cool drill. I think that could be adapted to lots of things. What about using abstract sounds, like clapping hands, sticks knocked together, or a bell for the three cues?

    We do a similar exercise. For the lower ranking students in order to work on their movements we would start them facing the front in a ready position; turn left in a zen kutsa dachi with a high, middle, low block or shuto following up with middle, low or high punch;

    from there turning 180 to the right using the same, or different two techniques

    then finishing up facing forward again in a zen kutsa dachi with the same or different techniques.

    Very good for the beginners in learning how to move their feet going in different directions.

    Sometimes we use a japanese drum as the cue to move to the next position
