Major Anti-Terrorism Arrest in Southern Ontario
This was on the evening news. Seventeen people were arrested in Toronto and surrounding areas following a two-year investigation by local, provincial, and federal law enforcement. The suspects had acquired three tonnes of ammonium nitrate, one third the amount used in the 1995 bombing of the AP Murrah Building in Oklahoma City. The suspects apparently had a list of targets, including the CSIS (Canadian Security and Intelligence Service) building and parliament buildings in Toronto.

Actually I think 3 tonnes is 3 TIMES the amount used in OC...but either way, it would make a heck of a bang.
You know, sooner or later these jazzbos will realize that building great big showy bombs is a losing game, and then the Western World will be in really big trouble... {I'm using definition 2....http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=jazzbo}.
Maybe I'm just bitter... I flew back from Ottawa today, and the security idiots made me dump the coffee out of my steel insulated mug and then tried to take it apart...checking to see if it was stuffed with semtex, I suppose. Y'know, if somebody shows up at boarding security with such a darned suspicious object, wouldn't it make sense to _arrest_ him?
OTOH, if 10 guys, completely unarmed but muscular and determined, all got on the same plane, precisely who would stop them from doing about anything they wanted, and how?
Maybe I should have a few belts of scotch before I fly...the whole process gets me thinking too much...David Anderson

I saw that story on the news this morning. That's some pretty scary stuff. I was surprised to find that their intended targets were in Canada; I would have assumed that they were trying to smuggle the ammonium nitrate into the US somehow to blow up something here.

Congrats to Canada for the biggest catch of the season. It's a darn shame you guys arn't as big of fans of the death penalty as I am.

Thanks to boys up North for having our back.
David, I had the same run around over a pair of nail clippers some years ago. Big goat rope and display of poor security. My daughter asked me (sotto voice and much later) if they ever wondered what could be done with the plastic knives that came with the meals. Not a lot of ligic being applied.
But the real cops are doing a bang up job. Good Job!Richard C. Goad

Why wouldn't they? Terrorists are targeting western targets and Canada is about western target.

They pulled my wife out once for a pair of tweezers. I couldn't believe they thought we could hijack the plane with a pair of tweezers. Maybe if I was MacGyver...
In the end my wife was like "Those aren't dangerous." and the lady looked up at her and said "These aren't dangerous." Then my wife said "I'm not going to hurt anyone." and the woman says "You're not going to hurt anyone." We walked away and I was thinking...wow...I'm married to a Jedi!!! Hahahaha It was completely surreal.Jason Robins

Our increased pressence in Afganistan has definately made us a target.
A relatively soft target at that...Chris Luttrell

I'm going respond to this cautiously, as it was not my intention to start a political thread. I thought the story was of interest because it showed a coordinated law enforcement exercise that prevented a terrorist attack, in this case, with Canadian targets. As Chris Luttrell alluded to, Canada has a lead military role in Afghanistan. I believe Canadian Forces recently took command of joint forces in Kandahar, as a matter of fact. Terrorist attacks, though not of the scale of 9/11/01, go on all over the world everday, so no one is really safe.

I should have added "A job well done by all the agencies involved."

I wasn't trying to imply that Canada wasn't a "worthy target" or anything... I hope no one took offense.

Sheila: Times have changed
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Sharon: Should we blame the government?
Liane: Or blame society?
Dads: Or should we blame the images on TV?
Sheila: No, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their beady little eyes
And flapping heads so full of lies
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: We need to form a full assault
Everyone: It's Canada's fault!
Sharon: Don't blame me
For my son Stan
He saw the damn cartoon
And now he's off to join the Klan!
Liane: And my boy Eric once
Had my picture on his shelf
But now when I see him he tells me to screw myself!
Sheila: Well, blame Canada
Everyone: Blame Canada
Sheila: It seems that everything's gone wrong
Since Canada came along
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Copy Guy: They're not even a real country anyway
Ms. McCormick: My son could've been a doctor or a lawyer rich and true,
Instead he burned up like a piggy on the barbecue
Everyone: Should we blame the matches?
Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
Sheila: heck no!
Everyone: Blame Canada
Blame Canada
Sheila: With all their hockey hullabaloo
Liane: And that ***** Anne Murray too
Everyone: Blame Canada
Shame on Canada
For...
The smut we must stop
The trash we must bash
The Laughter and fun
Must all be undone
We must blame them and make a fuss
Before someone thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus!!!!
