Krav Maga
I see alot of threads but not much on krav maga. Im just curious to know peoples opinion on the art. partly because i just joined a krav maga studio in sherman oaks and really excited about it. I have never taken any martial art before and im about to take this to the extreme with serious dedication. i want to master this..but again just curious to know peoples opinion on krav maga?

I love Krav Maga. I used to train in it for about a month before I took HKD. The guy who showed me what little I have learnt moved back to Israel. But in my opinion it is quite possibley the most effecient life/death situation martial art. And it's focus on elbows and knees greatly compliments the HapKiDo that I study right now.

Just like anything else, it depends on the instructor. KM has fallen victim (to a certain extent) to it's successful marketing strategies, specifically concerning its trainer/instructor certification programs.
If I were to take KM, I would only take it from a certified instructor who was certified by, and trained in, the Israeli military, preferably a former troop with combat experience. I would also remember that KM is nothing more than another military combatives system.
I certainly would not take it from someone who learned it in the spandex/t-shirt environment (although I'm sure some of those folks are good instructors too).
I did meet a former Israeli regimental commander here in Sarasota. He has offered to come by my unit and give us some instruction on KM M16/bayonette training. That is the kind of KM stuff I am looking for - stuff that I am pretty sure I would not get from a storefront.

Like Jeff C. said it has fallen wayside. Now you can become a certified instructor in 1 weekend.
I have Moni Azik's 5 DVD series. They were a waste of money. Thats why I usually try to find a friend or student who has some video to check before I buy.

i finally took my first class and it was great..our instructors are or were acually trained by darren levine. I have basic information on him but from people i havee talked to and the research that i have done.. He brought krav maga to the united states from israel..he has trained with the grandmaster (imi litchfield)and other leading krav maga instructors. My goal is to be able to be trained by him in the future.. His center is in west la..Again for those that want to research the name is Darren R Levine. Again thank you guys for all the comments you have left.

I teach FAST Defense seminars using the "bulletman" padded assailant. (I am not a Krav Maga person)
The Krav Maga guys have always had the best fighting technique.

I have recently had the opportunity to train with a few guys who do KM. I am a JKD student so it was interesting to note some of the similarities and differences bewteen KM and JKD. Good luck in your training. I hope that you enjoy it.

Strange...I've never been terribly impressed. Although, most of what I've seen seemed to be fairly watered down.

Unfortunately KM is rather easy to water down, and some dilute it to the point where KM is taught as a glorified aerobics class. That's not to say that it is necessarily a bad way to get in to shape, and it can certainly be a bit more interesting than a llot of the cardio-bounce stuff taught in health clubs. But as a martial art...a lot of stuff that is called KM is a better building block for fighting than a system of fighting.

Tarek, they are considerably different. One is extremely aggressive, and the other extremely....isn't.

As far as I know, Aikido is very fluid and based on blending with an enemy and using their momentum against them.
It's also a "do" so it's more of a way of life than a method of fighting (othes on the board can explain do vs jutsu WAY better than me), where-as KM is a military fighting style of immediately killing or incapacitating people ASAP. (right?)Last edited by De_Franza; 09-09-2006 at 11:24.
