Eku / Oar

Anybody done it, do it?
Like it?
Does it change over into say a shovel...?

Yes I practice it.

Great weapon, some nasty, dirty bunkai.
For example, scooping sand and throwing it to your opponent then striking him while he's temporarily blinded.

As far as transfering it to a shovel, possibly a spade, something not too large or cumbersome.

It wasnt something I was looking into myself really.
Its something one of my teachers was asking me if I was interested in learning.

Im not to hype on learning anything new right now. Would like to just get alot of other stuff up to par.

Jeff,
I have studied Eaku. It is the one I enjoy most. It can produce some serious damage and the strikes are much more versitile then the bo. Also, if you are up around Jamacia pond and some one steps to you, you can give the oar uppercut to the armpit!

My favorite trick with the oar is that one employed by Ulyses.

Retiring from his adventures at last, he is said to have walked inland...carrying an oar on his shoulder...and only reckoned himself far enough away from the sea when some local bumpkin asked him, "Hey, what is that thing you're a toting?"

Rather than a std spade, look at a transplant spade, the blade on these is typically about 6" wide and long like the end of the eku. You'd have to play with one to check out the balance difference.
