Kung Fu in Michigan
Does anyone know of any reputable Kung Fu schools in Michigan? Or does anyone know of any site online that could help me? So far I have not had the best of luck.
Thanks,

Got a general area of Michigan to work with?
I know of a couple places, but it'd help to have a location reference.Message: Due to the ongoing Recession, God has decided the light at the end of the tunnel will be shut off due to power costs. That is all.

So Mike did you ever find the kung fu schools if so can you recommend one? The reason being the only one I found charges $150 I am poor college kid as such cannot afford anything that pricey a month or perhaps you can help me Sean. Please reply soon I really want to learn kungfu.

Digging up bones...
One of the people who posts here occasionally, wingchundo.girl, may be able to help you. I think their website is http://www.ambroseacademy.com/main.htm
I know there is a Kung Fu location on Woodward Ave (zenmartialarts.com)
I'm not versed in all the different Kung Fu styles, whether you want something harder or softer, but I am from Michigan and thought I'd throw those out there. The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly. - Theodore Roosevelt

Yeah Zen martial arts was the one that costs $150 well at least the Rochester Hills school charges that much I doubt the Berkley one is much cheaper. As for Wing Chun I know of a few in my area but see I don't just want to learn any kung fu I want to learn I guess for lack of better terms "good" kung fu. The reason being the current instructor I'm training with is more out for the business portion of owning a school. In the sense that if you pay the price to test for your belt you pretty much pass you can have no idea what techniques you must know for that level at still pass with just an extra Sunday class briefly covering what you don't get(this never happens). I think its fairly bad when you get cussed out because your going too hardcore against a higher ranking black belt plus I've never heard of a style being so arrogant claiming we're better than every martial art because our grandmaster crippled himself and created a new style using science. I'm sorry I must sound very whiney in this post. But yes anything around the Rochester, Troy, Madison Heights, and Sterling Heights would be ideal. Thank you for your time.

Sorry, I don't know where all the Kung Fu schools are, much less which Kung Fu styles are more or less hardcore. Maybe someone else knows a little more.
If you do find something, please reply here about it, you never know when someone else will be searching for the same thing.
Are you looking for Kung Fu specifically or just a school and style that is a little more intense and "hardcore" ?The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly. - Theodore Roosevelt

I'm looking for kung fu in the sense that it is not just a sport or recreational pass time I'm talking like traditional. I prefer kung fu because I am Chinese and I kinda want to learn the style of my homeland if that makes sense. I mean granted kung fu is just one of the things I want to do I've considers doing Tae Kwon Do because my kicks have power but no flexibility or speed or perhaps judo/japanese jujutsu along with brazilian jiu jutsu because my grappling skills are fairly weak and lacking and muay thai(just not the mma version) because I feel that my techniques could use a power up. I mean I know about a place called martial arts unlimited that teaches pretty much all of this but I rather not overwhelm myself with too many styles even though the core principles are there in the training. So I mean if you have any good(by good I mean fairly price nothing over $100 and way too far away) schools you can recommend for those it might be helpful.

You're in college right? Check there for starters. I taught at one college for several years & know other people in the CMA community that still do.
Plus you list 3 arts. You've got plenty on your plate.
Otherwise, what's the problem with WC? If it's in your area & a good quality school & instructor, what's the problem? It doesn't get much more epically CMA than that.Message: Due to the ongoing Recession, God has decided the light at the end of the tunnel will be shut off due to power costs. That is all.

That is very true I have considered WC as an option as for the college thing the closest thing we have is kick boxing. We use to have a Tae Kwon Do club and I use to partake in it but that ended really quick. We also use to have a japanese jujutsu but apparently that has even left now.
So the true thing is really location and whether or not the lessons are reasonable for my financial situation.

Yes start at college. The problem with college martial arts clubs I've seen is they lack in the quality department a lot of the times.

When taking college martial arts, they come in different flavors, especially traditional martial arts. The Goju Ryu instructor here takes it too seriously, but can't make a training curriculum for beans.
Judo and other grappling arts are good for the most part, there are rarely any bad schools in my experience.
What are your goals for martial arts? Compete? Get in better shape? What is it?Life without effort is a waste of time and air.

Thanks for the clarification, what school do you go to?
You are young, you still have your whole life to dedicate to learning martial arts. Since money is tight, if I were in your shoes, I'd likely focus on just one style and really focus on that, become good at it. By the time you are ready for more, you will likely be in a better financial position to do whatever you want. The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Hi i just joined after seeing this thread and by coincidence I also happen to be living in and attending Spring Arbor University in Michigan at the moment and just wanted to ask a few questions as I have been interested in picking up Chinese martial arts as well..
I know its a rare chance but would there be any chance that there is a school or instructor nearby my area that could teach me Zui Quan or "drunken fist" style ? as that is the style im most interested in .
And how fit would one need to be in order to start learning any chinese martial art ? Ive been working out very regularly for about 7 months now since i started though im poor when it comes to cardio since i dont practice it that often.

Joi Kuen is more a technique & theory, rather than a completed style... no matter what the internet/wiki/youtube/hong kong or mainland cinema gives you.
There are a few styles that have joi kuen techniques built in & used in conjunction with their core styles that work, but still, technique vs theory... theory applied to technique, not technique applied to theory.

I've been in the same boat but was married so it prevented me from driving that 3x a week for Bak Mei. By the time the marriage was over, the teacher had passed suddenly & I moved along with my training until life got in the way again. I made another detour & continue training.
It's still within my list of things to do so I may followup with his students. At which point, I'll make the 200+ mile round trip for quality training.
Gotta ask yourself ... how much do you really want it?Message: Due to the ongoing Recession, God has decided the light at the end of the tunnel will be shut off due to power costs. That is all.

I would make that sacrifice if i could but as im still a student and my education is still an important factor in my life I would prefer to avoid any unneccessary waste of time .. especially when going there and back would take out 5 hours.. I wouldnt mind learning Hung Gar or Wing Chun its just that in my home country i am able find schools that teach those styles. While there are some styles that i could learn here that are not available back home..

No waste & don't take it like that, but certain things require certain sacrifices.
If you're here for college, then you're where you should be at college, doing what you should be.
If you're here for martial arts, then you've got room to mature by making those sacrifices.Message: Due to the ongoing Recession, God has decided the light at the end of the tunnel will be shut off due to power costs. That is all.
