Default Opening a can of worms

I found this video searching google. While I don't nessisarily agree with all of it. I found it quite amusing, because I am a big proponent of realistic training.

The video does make a good point? I enjoy judo because we can go all out at it during randori. Jujutsu is my favorite style but it is hard to go all out at jujutsu without just fighting.

    Sorros,
Red Stick is simply the English translation for Baton Rouge, think about it but not too hard or that Air Force intellect might go into overtime.

You mean the ROK Marines right? I experianced those crazy guys in Osan, they were tough as nails. They were breaking fresh pine limbs over each others back to show off or impress us one day, then one of them picked up a huge beetle and ate the disgusting thing

That would be Tae Kwon Do. Not the strip mall variety though. They also drink a lot of soju, which helps with pain management.

That soju will kill you, nothing like drinking one that has the alcohol content of beer and the very next one of the same brand having the alcohol content of whiskey. Totally unregulated.

Yep, like much of the alcohol in the Far East, that's the beauty of it. Every night is an entirely different experience. Like life and a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.

I think they're use to it though, many's the ROK Marine I saw drinking it out of those big 'combat bottles' while patrolling the wire and it didn't seem to affect them at all...while a few miles away U.S. Marines were coming back from 'American Town' in a state of rigor mortis. Grape 'Oscar' too. Gotta give them props, ROK Marines (and their military in general) are some hard SOBs. Their Air Force whooped our CSSD handily in an infantry exercise...wtf?

Muay Thai, Judo, boxing, BJJ, Kali...these are all a joke? It is 'mixed with different things' because it is a mixed martial art.

What exactly are your credentials that allow you to determine if it's a 'joke' or not? What rank did you hold in MCMAP to offer this conclusion? Lieutenant Colonel George Bristol and Master Gunnery Sergeant Cardo Urso with almost 70 years of martial arts experience between them are a 'joke'?

    David,

I was unaware that MCMAP had elements of FMA in it. Could you elaborate on that a bit? I admit total ignorance to how MCMAP was developed with the exception of what I have read on here and discussions of how it compares to the Modern Army Combatives program. Does the Army system have any Kali in it as well, or just MCMAP?

    Thanks!

Much of the knife work at higher levels comes from (Sayoc?)Kali, at least this was what my instructor said. He even said that if you watch the movie 'The Hunted' you can see a lot of the techniques. I don't know enough about Kali itself to elaborate much or draw parallels though. He did say that although many of the techniques were adopted, in MCMAP there is no reinforced cutting..for some reason this was not used.

As for the Army system, I'm afraid I have no idea. Jeff Cook might know.

No comparison but here is what we have done in detail I will leave it to someone that knows more about this then I to make comparison. As far as "advanced" knife work that I have seen so far all we have done are: (all movments are done single handed with the knife in the right hand) forward slash slashing from right to left at a downward angle across the chest, the reverse slash is slashing from left to right in a downward angle across the chest, straight thrust is thrusting towards oppenets chest, forward thrust is thrusting towards the opponets neck left side with a twist and rip on the way out, reverse thrust is thrusting towards the opponets neck right side with a twist and rip on the way out, then the only other times that I have seen the knife used is with blocking techniques such as counter to the knife from high to low (assuming the knife is in the opponets right hand) you block with outside of your left forarm to the opponets right forarm between his elbow and wrist and then thrust the knife into the opponets armpit, and the last block I have seen with a knife is in the counter to the forward thrust where you block the forward thrust with your left forarm between the opponets elbow and wrist then put the knife into the shoulder pocket and slash downward.

It has been a few years since I left active duty and MCMAP was just getting going in force by a year or so. I would be interested to know how many Marines you see walking around with brown or black riggers' belts?

ROK Marines are tough. The reguar ROK Army. . . really doesn't impress me. But I really can't blame a conscipt, yanked from college, paid 70원-100원 a month for not being motivated, dedicated and all other sorts of hooah. They sure got alot of discipline though, but not much motivation or real concern for their work. Almost the polar opposite of the US Army, were discipline to seniors is alot more lax, but quality of work and motivation to succeed are sky high. Just my 2cents.

As for my base we have one black blet instructor and one black belt user as for brown users I think there are about 5 on the whole base! With a brown belt class scheduled to run after the first of the year. There should be about 4 more brown belt users at that time now I know when I say base you amy assume that I am talking about 1000's of troops but I am only talking about our small traing command of around 300-400 Marines at any givin time. Based of course on how many students are attending the various MOS schools offered here. But the Marine Corps is starting to get alot more aggressive with making it a requirment for promotion it is not set on stone anywhere yet but I was told by my monitor the the promotion board is starting to look at what belt you hold in relation to your Rank and job I was also told that it is expected that personnel be a brown belt for GySgt.
