My experience w/Taekkyon
I had my first encounter with the art of Taekkyon the other day and was very pleased with it. It was explained to me how there are three main divisions of this art: sport, self-defense, and art aspects. I was able to do the self-defense division. The kicking was very good and way different than that of any other kicking arts I had seen. They used their foot to pull, push, and cup all while kicking. They do have the standard tkd kicks, thai kicks and all of that as well as some new ones i have never seen. The footwork reminded me of langkas in the indonesian sense. I was greatly impressed with the concepts and principals of why and how they kick. For ex their thai kick looks the same but is done differently and it all was explained to me really well. I was greatly impressed and would love to hear about anyone else's experience with this art.

I am jealous, Robby! I have always wanted first hand experience in taekkyon. Is it something you are going to continue to train in or was it a one time deal? If you get a chance, post some pictures.

I am going to try to see if I will be able to train on saturdays. The gentleman who did the lesson with me lives in another town and is only in Incheon on the weekends. The next time I am able to train with him I am going to see if he will allow me to video tape the techniques and maybe explain the principals behind it (he speaks decent english and can explain them well). I will post it online for you guys. {on a side note im going to video tape my hapkido training up to this point for my belt level if you guys would like to see it as well.} To Unkokusai I can only speak for my experience but this man had incredible power in his kicks. Where did your students train at?

Robby,
I spoke to my friend, last night, and got a brief update on how your session want. I find it amusing that you say he speaks "decent" English
.
As you mentioned, it is difficult for him to teach you because he is only in Incheon on weekends, and sometimes not even then. I suggested he recommend a gym but he says that many of the good ones have closed down.
At some point, try to get his wife to make you lunch...she is a fantastic cook.
Cheers,
Jason

Jason,
We should all meet up sometime, train and then go eat. Robert I would say to the only video footage that i have seen was the "sport" part, so i would agree based on that but my first hand experience was quite different. Robert are you in Seoul?Robby Hedrick

I am jealous! I don't know that much about Taekkyon and would love to learn more. Look forward to seeing the HKD videos. Glad to hear you are enjoying your stay.

Great videos! A match up between Taekkyon and Capoeira would be fun to watch.
