Class Demographics
Just wondered if anyone else noticed a trend in demographics in your school. For example, over the years, we have a very high number of school teachers that have children attending our classes. This unexpected high ratio makes us look at our program to see what is attracting teachers to our school. I feel it is a real compliment to the instructor that other teaching professionals choose his school.
In the adult class, I was surprised to learn that over 70% of the students have extensive musical background. Most don't play anymore but I find it curious that musicians seemed attracted to our style. You start to discover trends when you start talking to your students about work, life, and their other interests. Could be a coincidence, but something to look into. It may point to a niche market or how to advertise to this demographic.
Have you made any connections to your style and the work or lifestyles of your students?

We sub-let the dojang to outside organizations during off hours and much of our student base was developed around that.

Besides Kenpo, we also offer an MMA style shootfighting curriculum. Thus we get a lot of 20 something, tattooed, pierced, shaved head, Halo playing, energy drink drinkers. I joke about it, but most of them are great guys and hilarious to be around.
In Kenpo, it's all over the place. A large variety of ages, athletic ability, stamina and a decent mixture of males and females. The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly. - Theodore Roosevelt
