Handle in what way?

All joking aside, I like eight as a number, unless someone is helping. I believe it's important to let kids hit the thai pads, kick shields and focus mitts, so if class is real large, it takes too long to run through them all, without some assistance. The unforgivable crime is soft hitting. Do not hit at all if it can be avoided; but never hit softly. - Theodore Roosevelt

Very good question. Ho many in deed? I teach Shinbudo, a mixture of modern Sport Jujutsu (judo+karate+aikido) and Sport Kenjutsu (chanbara+bokken drills+seitei iaido), and with all these things to entertain them I still find myself talking to bored faces
I guess there should be no more than 5-8 pairs in one class per one instructor (and I am speaking about kids age 7-15).

Depends on the kids. Older and higher ranking students should behave and do what they are told better.

15 students in my children's class now, mostly 8 year olds and two slightly older. That's stretching the limits in terms of safety and usefulness of the class as far as I'm concerned, any more and it'd be total chaos.

Depends on the art as well. I could handle a lot larger karate classes than I can boxing classes.

It depends on multiple factors
1) Age, younger children have often less focus and need more attention. We have a little dragon class for children in the age of 4 and above, students need a lot of attention.
2) Prior training. Children, that have been in martial arts for a while are used to learn and paying attention. White belts and beginners need to learn to focus.
3) Duration of class, some younger children have a lower attention span, if a class reaches the end, they tend to goof off moreNorbert Funke
