Default How many hours do you train a week?

I just wondered what other peoples training time was in a week?

Currently I have stepped mine up a lot as I am hoping to pass my Brown Belt in Feb.

Sadly the only days our clubs run means it's 3 days in a row I have to train. Tue, Wed Thu.

Tuesday, I did a single hour evening class, then yesterday, I met my instructor for a lunch hour private lesson, then did a 2.5 hour lesson in the evening. Now its Thursday, I have another hour lesson tonight, but I am running out of energy and ache a bit today.

What made me raise this was I read in either Otsuka or Suzuki's book that they used to train for 8 hours every day, yesterday I did 3.5 hours and am hurting because of it.

    Off for a hot bath

I train 14 to 15 hours a week. 2hours ever evening until sunday when I'll do mixed for 2-3 hours. I also spend 1-2 hours at gym every morning except saturday and sunday (lest I be underway) before work starts

Due to my current work/school/job training schedule I have not been able to keep up my usual routine, but this was my typical week.

Monday and Wednesday(Kata and Kihon): 1.5 hours Karate class, 1 hour weight training, .5 hour cardio training, and .5 hour trampoline gymnastics, Core Routine

Tuesday and Thursday: .5-1 hour Karate practice (Kata and Kihon at home), .5 hour trampoline, Core routine

Friday: 2 hours Karate Class(Kumite), 1.5 hour weight training, .5 hour cardio, trampoline if I have the energy, Core Routine

    Saturday: Rest, Core Routine

Sunday: 2.5 Hours Karate Class (Kihon, Kata, Kobudo), Core routine, .5 Hour Karate Home Practice (Kata)

This is how I typically train, 9-10 hours of Karate per week. This is not nearly what I would like to do, but it is all I have energy for since working nightshift and my sleep schedule is always in Limbo. I also did not put in my Judo on Tuesdays (3 hours). My Karate is practiced with one 5 minute break or no breaks. I can't wait until the semester is over.

Maybe you should try spreading it out a bit. I know your school only trains on certain days but self training on other days is a very good option. I travel alot and don't really have time to attend ongoing classes like I could when I was younger, but I still manage to train at least 6-7 hours a week. Its not as much as some of these guys but its enough to keep me in shape and my skills up to scratch and fits in nicely with my busy lifestyle.

I also think an important comment needs to be made. Quality is much more important than quantity. I know most of us here already assume quality training, but it needs to be said. When I state weight lifting I mean actual time lifting weights (I set up before I begin my lift) not breaks or standing around catching my breath. Same goes for Karate, we take breaks in class, but I subtract that time from my totals, and at home there are no breaks. Also the amount of energy one puts into practice is just as important as the continuity. Sloppy kicks and weak punches, pointless block and piss-poor stances do not count as Karate training to me.
Sorry about the rant, after seeing some of our younger brown belts train I had to vent somewhere .

Gentlemen & Ladies. Training is ALL day EVERY day. Training is physical, and it is mental, and it is spiritual. Training is when you take the first step out of bed...exit your house...get out of your car at work.... It is in everything that you do. Being mentally and physically prepared to defend somebody's life or your own. When danger is at hand you will not likely be all warmed up from a dojo workout. Traiing is more than stretching, punching, weight lifting...It is a MINDSET. Train HARD!!!!

Well said, but I believe he is referring to the physical aspect, other wise I have not accounted for reading, meditation, and scribing about it.
