schools on or near Yokota AB?

Does anyone here know if there are any martial arts classes (for adults) held on the Air Force base at Yokota or in the nearby community?

I would prefer to find a Shokotan, Hakko Ryu, or aikido class.

If you have experience or recommendations I would be interested as I may be moving there in the next few months.

Blaine are you in the AF currently? Send me a p.m. on Monday and I'll check with some friends that are out there now. If you are in the AF dsn the gym and they can give you a list of what's offered on base ( I know there are classes just not sure which ones). If not again remind me on Monday and I'll see what I can find for you.

When you get there, suggest you start at the Recreation Center, ask for one of the local Japanese to help you out. Find someone that reads Japanese and check around Fussa City, etc. I know of some koryu kenjutsu at Mitaka City, etc. but the bases are notorious spotty.

Also, pop over to the Japanese national mess hall or one of the Japanese units / liaison officers, ask around. Ask JNCs that work in the various offices, etc.

There's got to be something but finding the right thing in advance is not necessarily going to be easy.

Your best bet is to find a sports center and check the action out on a Friday or Saturday night. There are two big ones in Fussa and I think a couple more in the surrounding area. The best thing to do is ask about those and see if you can't figure out how to get there and check out the billboards. More than likely, if they are public sports centers, they will have a Judojo and a kendojo with the big three practicing in them: Judo, Kendo, Aikido. That is your easiest start as you will probably have a mix of others coming in there.

We are in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Class starts around 6pm. Send Glenn Stockwell an e-mail or give him a call. He's the head of the school but runs the dojo in Tokyo when he's not busy with work.

If you'd like to learn Taijitsu, my Sensei is located in Chiba.. but they have a noon class on Saturdays. Send me a PM if you'd like info for them as I'd have to do some coordination for that.
