The original Henry was .44 rimfire. It shot a 200(ish) grain bullet over 26-28grains of black powder. It was not a high powered load by any stretch, it just was a repeating rifle in a world of single shots.

Tyler Henry got an investor for his company, which unfortunately went bankrupt after the Civil War. The investor, Oliver Winchester, took over his assets, and directed designers that the rifle add a wood forearm and a loading gate in the receiver, and thus the Winchester Rifle (later to be renamed the Winchester model 1866) was created.

The 44WCF (Winchester Center Fire) or .44-40 didn't appear until Winchester introduced the model 1873.

So, a Henry that is not a reproduction, chambered for .44-40, should be fairly rare.

I was doing some research on old 1800's era rifles. It never dawned on me that many were chambered with rimfire rounds. It is a little funny that the .22 family of calibers are about the only thing left in rimfire.
I wonder just how many how many calibers were produced in rimfire cartridges that have simply faded away.

The first set of gatling guns bought by the govt (1865 model I believe) used a rimfire, in .50 cal? Prior to that, gatling guns had paper cartridges in steel chambers fired by a cap, which was temperamental (and why the govt didn't buy them). The late 1800's brought about a lot of advancements in weapons and also advances in medical treatment that I suppose we can thank the Civil war for.

There were a bunch more rimfire cartridges, but the Henry and Gatling are probably the best known.

We wouldn't have needed the Battle of San Jacinto.

Huh? This is an open platform weapon. How could it not be easily customized?
Please explain, and give me your first hand experience which you have had with this gun.

Remember this? I just went to my local gun store and a guy was showing his Webley to the gunsmith. I was about to make an offer when I realized the person had already sold it and was making preparations for shipping. Arrgh!
