LOL, Heart was really really good, and Ann was really hot... even if I was well past adolescence.

I really hope that the documentary is showing around here locally. It looks really good! Rush is unfortunately one of the groups that I really would like to see in concert, but I managed to always miss for some reason or another.
Speaking of great concerts, when I was in Hawaii I also saw Elton John. I didn't originally have any interest in seeing the show, but I had the motorcycle and a buddy had the tickets but no wheels. So I hauled the two of us to the concert and was surprised to find that I not only enjoyed it, but it was one of the best concerts I had ever attended. For a guy that is/was a metal head, that was quite the pleasant surprise.Robert M. Carver

I am just loving this thread, bringing back memories of me and my buds attending all those concerts in our youth, Van Halen in the 80s, Pink Floyd in '95, Rush , Joe Satriani back in '90, Mr. Big in '97, G3 (satriani , Vai Malmsteen with my future wife! in 2004), the Allmans in '95, Michael Schenker Group in '88 at Rock and Roll Heaven in Toronto (an unknown band called the Black Crowes opened up for MSG)...The Stones in 85 or 86 (can't recall the exact year) , Triumph in '89.
Man I miss my youth!Unleashing my inner bodyguard!

You ain't lyin', Mark.
Saw Metallica/Queensryche in concert in Savannah about '89/90...great show, but such a shame; the auditorium was only half full. Though James Hetfield said 'well, we're small in number but big in spirit!' I read later they (Metallica) wouldn't be back, and I don't blame them. They were selling out arenas all over the country.
Then there was a Ratt/Poison concert in the 80's...think '86? Also really good. There was some Christian fundamentalist people preaching to all the people in line and telling us we were all going to hell for listening to 'Devil Music' (Ratt and Poison?!?). They were handing out tracts, and when I was handed one I calmly lit it on fire with a big smile and handed it back to the guy - much to the delight of my friends. The poor fellow paled as if he had seen Satan himself.Last edited by David Craik; 05-13-2010 at 19:08.

Yeah, I have been rediscovering my real taste in music. I've always been eclectic... 70s/80s New Wave, 60's hippie rock, Jazz, New Age, 60s/70s R&B, some of the Grunge/Alternative stuff from the 90's was really good (like Nivana), but it always comes back to Hard Rock from the late 60s through the 80s.
It was pretty cool growing up in Oklahoma City, because we had pretty good access to lots of great concerts. OKC itself usually got the big acts in, but if it was really BIG, you had Dallas (Led Zepplin 1977!) only a few hours away. Plus Tulsa was another big venue only 80 miles away. Then I join the Marines and get stationed in Hawaii, another big concert location. So I've managed to see some pretty good concerts over the years... then I got old and now could really care less unless it's a group I haven't seen before. Heck, we've got Styx, Foreigner, and Kansas in concert here in Baton Rouge tonight, but I've seen all three before, and quite frankly would prefer to remember them from when they were in their prime.

Almost forgot, saw Twisted Sister at a legendary concert venue in Toronto called the Masonic Temple (my dad saw Led Zepellin and a local band called Edward Bear there in '69), anyway old Dee Snider had a way of getting the audience involved, he would pick out one guy and say "hey buddy , why aren't you clapping? I know, you've got a date with the Palm Sisters after the show."
After that I was on my feet enthusiastically clapping through fear Dee would pick on me next.Unleashing my inner bodyguard!

Wost concert I ever saw:
The Fix, doing a totally acoustic set in a banquet room in a Holiday Inn in Beaumont, Tx.
Yep, one thing leads to another; went to the concert sober, wished I hadn't and made a quick change to the scenario.Dennis Monk

Rock groups I have seen in concert....Not really hard rock, more like top 40. I was a good kid and didn't go see the evil groups Dennis did.

Saw Styx and REO Speedwagon in 2001, those guys could still rock. It was really neat to see the crowd, old people and young having a good time.
Just remembered a thing at the Metallica concert I mentioned earlier. It was part of the "....and Justice for All" tour and the centerpiece of the stage set was a huge statue of lady justice (with the scales and blindfold). As the concert went on every time you would glance at the statue more and more pieces would be missing until it was about gone even though when I saw pieces were missing I watched it nearly the whole time. Yet I never saw any of them actually removed. Really neat sleight-of-hand on a big scale, David Copperfield kind of stuff.Last edited by David Craik; 05-16-2010 at 10:37.

Awesome. Satriani is unreal.
So how about Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and Jhon Petrucci doing some Smoke on the Water? This is by far the best non-DP rendition of this song.

That was incredible, in two replies my favorite guitarists, Morse, Satriani, Vai and Petrucci...all doing DP. Any way we can fit Eric Johnson in here?

I don't know about Eric Johnson, but I do know about Ritchie Blackmore.
Yeah, it's no secret that Blackmore is still my fav, and the below video is from his final concert with Deep Purple in '93. Blackmore at his very best.

Great stuff guys... now a different tract. I also love Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell. Here's a video of them performing Die Young in June 2009 and a terrific solo by Iommi at the beginning.
Here's another from 2007...

Since there's an appreciation for guitar virtuosity in this thread, here's a little blues-rock by Michael Lee Firkins, one of the best shredders most people have never heard of (or at least no longer remember).
