Two faces Armistice Day - Boy brimming pride fanatics burning hate
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ning-hate.html
I just wondered if anyone had seen this? It's disgusting and really makes me angry.

Standing on the street chanting hate slogans, burning symbolic emblems of Remembrance, doing everything possible to offend and outrage... is one of the freedoms that are afforded to people in Free Countries, that could simply never happen in the countries which - in this case - are being espoused as the righteous.
In some ways I am encouraged and proud of the fact that demonstrations like this are still possible. Of course this is overshadowed by the revulsion and anger at such hideous abuse of generosity and tolerance that allowed it to take place. It must also be highly offensive to the many people who will be associated with this group of nutters simply because they share similar appearance. British Muslim groups should be taking a very strong public stance to disassociate themselves from such actions.
Now, wouldn't it be nice to see a photograph from a long distance, to show how many thousands of people lined the route for the Armistice Day celebrations, to compare with one of the tiny group of demonstrators, the dozens of police escort and the three or four Press photographers there to capture the non-event. By giving equal space in the article and pictures, the newspaper actually managed to elevate this pathetic sputum-filled group of scrotum-scratching over-educated simpletons to a place where they don't deserve to be. Like the dirt from under my nails, they are a consequence of existence, but not something I wish to spend any great time on.David Noble

To see the dignified, proud and respectful way in which your countrymen observe this important holiday is truly awesome. To see that Muslim scum act out against a country and people that has made them welcome literally makes me sick.
Is it just me, but doesn't it seem that Muslims are pretty much the only group that seems to go out of their way to make themselves unwelcome anywhere they settle?Robert M. Carver

I do wonder how many Muslim Britons attended Remembrance events, and honored your brave soldiers - just for a frame of reference. Could it be that this group of despicable people are not representative of a whole?
I can see that were I in their shoes I might have a different worldview with regard to the West. A history of imperialism, repression, and invasion wouldn't sit well just as they didn't sit well with our own colonists. But I would also stay in my own friggin' country. They should all be deported.

I appreciate the freedoms and dignity of the UK. These protesters disgust me some. I respect their right to protest and they certainly have many good points regarding the brutality of British foreign policy over the centuries. However, their lack of respect for British culture, the culture of their new homes, I find really distasteful. Their (this particular group's) goal, I believe, is not to enjoy freedom so much as to reverse colonize.
Not where I live. However, the religious ones seem to have an attitude that their culture and religion is simply "correct" and it's just a matter of time until everyone else figures that out.
We have problems with non-assimilating Chinese and Vietnamese in our area. Those who do try, however, do great. It's hard for the first and (sometimes) second generation. They appreciate when they are openly welcomed. It makes a big difference.
I recall a delightful Palestinian colleague of mine two companies ago who is very religious. Her family invited mine over for dinner along with that of a female French colleague of mine who married a Moroccan (named Mohamed - go figure. Very nice guy who "gets" Western culture just fine).
My Palestinian colleague greeted my wife in Arabic and considered her like a sister. She did not seem to grasp that, to my wife, Islam and Arab culture are symbols of an oppressive invader who conquered her country and took over her culture around the 1100s. Another guest, a beautiful red-haired Palestinian woman who was working on her PhD in Middle Eastern Studies at Berkeley, had to explain this to my colleague. Point of story - this attitude of "we're right, everyone else is just waiting to wake up and figure it out" exists in Middle Eastern Arabic/Islamic culture. It is not always meant in a mean way.
I had a chat with my Palestinian colleague about this. What was communicated was the idea that others may not want her religion or culture but we (us US/CA/Bay Area locals) are glad to have her and her people here and be neighbors, colleagues and sincere friends. Ultimately, accepting such an attitude means putting American culture and values above her religion, if that makes sense. She seemed to take the idea to consider and was content putting our mutual friendship and love (in a social/family/community sense) over these cultural and political questions. I guess that made this lovely Muslim lady a very good Christian, huh?
I'm going to get in trouble for that one....
Anyway, I think the best way to deal with these types of angry Islamists from a public level (i.e. you, me, and the rest of the neighbors) is to hear them, respect their feelings of pain and humiliation, set some ground rules of mutual respect, and make friends (and eat lots of delicious international food together - God knows, the Brits could use it). This ought to pull the rug out from underneath their anger and resentment. Those who cannot let go will loose their followers who can let go and look forward to a better future together with the rest of us. It may take a generation or two. If they act out illegally, send law enforcement after them and prosecute fully. Carrot and stick.
That's just my two cents, as I live in the middle of this and what we've got here works really well.I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.

Thanks for that Erik. It was a beautiful picture that recognised, identified and empathised with some key features. Bringing it back to a person-to-person example, but with an understanding of the larger issues. In the end, it all comes down to the quality of the individual person.

Ironic that you mention that,....... but we (us US/CA/Bay Area locals) are glad to have her and her people here and be neighbors, colleagues and sincere friends. Ultimately, accepting such an attitude means putting American culture and values above her religion, if that makes sense.
because I find the Bay Area to be perhaps one of the most self-righteous, pretentious, un-accepting places I've ever been on the face of the Earth
(And I've even been to Japan.
) but maybe that's because I'm a "un-enlightened Christian hick veteran from the midwest."

It is about the very human, very normal (perhaps essential) ability of the human mind to identify characteristics in the people and events which we live through... then apply those observations to a wider grouping and anticipate a future event/encounter will be similar. It works. Most of the time.
I have met people of xxx nationality, who were repulsive, obnoxious buffoons of the highest/lowest order. Do I have the right to expect all the rest of that nationality to be the same? What if I had met 637,000 people of xxx nationality, all of whom were tiresome, aggressive, smelly fools filled with petty-minded bitterness about their small genitalia... would the larger sample size allow me more freedom to label their million+ compatriots with the same expected faults?
I think people with red telephones are more powerful than people with blue telephones. But I did meet somebody once that had a yellow one, and I could never work her out at all.
That's a bit of a silly post. It wasn't meant to offend anyone. I'm having a strange day. My legs have been playing games with me and I'm tired. I thought I could add something to keep the thread going. Maybe I should have been playing Mario Kart instead.

Hey - quit making fun of small genitalia!
On another note, Allen - the Bay Area can be pretty intolerant against WASPs, it's true. It's very PC (which is pretty close to facist minus the violence) here but you can get past it. Just takes a bit of fitting in and acclimating. Where have you been? Did you get stuck in Berkeley (where is that vomiting emoticon)?I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.

DLI?
Funny - Monterey, Salinas, on south up to Santa Barbara are our redneck areas, not hippy. The hippies moved to Oregon and Humbolt County.I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.
