Advise for a Martial Dad
Hi,
I'm pretty much a stay at home dad with a 10mo old son, My days are pretty much taken up by watching him and housework. I have two days that I get to train, but I like to spend that time working on technique.
I used to go to the gym to stay fit and trim, but now I'm around 290 ( about 60lbs over) and I don't feel like I'm carrying the excess well at all.
What kind of diet do I really need?

Hmm, strange that you would ask such a question. You'll find that we have a lot of folks that are on the low-carb lifestyle and had a lot of success with it. In a recent discussion (that I have linked below), it explains the basics of the LC diet, and there are thread after thread of information in this forum concerning it. More than likely we will be visited by the Rasputin, the High Priest of Low-Carb, and you can ask him to expand on anything you might need further explanation on.

Too Funny,
Hi,
I'm pretty much a stay at home dad with an 11mo old son, My days are pretty much taken up by watching him and housework. I have three days that I get to train, but I like to spend that time working on technique.
I used to go to the gym to stay fit and trim, but now I'm around 265 ( about 30lbs over, was a lot more) and I don't feel like I'm carrying the excess well at all.
~~~I have a Budoseek twin.~~~
Besides eating right I found I have time to do things during the day, especially when my little guy wants to be carried. He is a 25 to 30lb weight for horse stance squats (he has a blast), I can stretch for nearly a half hour when he is happily playing, do push-ups, or do sit-ups. He loves walks, so weather permitting I try to take a 2 to 3 mile walk with him or even walk at a mall for 30min to an hour. I even did some stance transitions while put away the dishes and other chores.
I'll admit I can't do anything intense, expect to finish X reps, or expect to go for Y minutes but everything helps. You just have to be a little imaginative to work stuff in. I probably look like a total fruit from the outside but who cares.Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. - Albert Einstein
I have indeed posted a mountain of nutrition information in this forum, lots of which you will find to be helpful. If you read it all and still aren't sure of how to approach dropping that weight (and gaining so much more in the process!), post in this thread and I will be happy to assist you further.
I talked to my wife about it, and she doesn't want to go on the diet with me so I'm going it alone.
Maybe once she sees how much better you look and feel she will be motivated to join you.
Just keep in mind that it is not a diet. You don't give up grains and sugar to lose weight and then go back to them later. You do it because you have come to recognize that they are metabolic poison and you don't want them in your body any longer.Before one can become successful, he must learn to tell the difference between what is impossible and what is merely difficult.
Buy this book and read it, then pass it to your wife:
Seriously. It's an easy read but it may well be the most important book you read this year.Before one can become successful, he must learn to tell the difference between what is impossible and what is merely difficult.
A real martial diet would consist of eating only the things that you kill with your bare hands.
I haven't had a chance to buy any new reading material.....but I've actually started reading labels and reducing my carb intake and calorie intake. I also am half way through my first semester back at college and have recently discovered they have added a gym in some unused space. So while my son with is with his grand parents I will get a work in. Things have worked out for the best. Oh and I was kidding myself in my original post, I went to the doctor and weighed in at 312lbs.
I'll give this some time and hopefully be able to come back here with some real progress.
Thanks again for the positive responses and the help.
If you eat the right foods you won't have to worry about caloric intake. Your appetite will adjust to its correct amount and you will pull freely from your fat cells to meet any lowered intake naturally.
Stick to foods which don't raise insulin like meats, eggs, cheeses, butter, coconut milk/oil, and non-starchy veggies (broccoli, carrots, spinach, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, onions, etc).Before one can become successful, he must learn to tell the difference between what is impossible and what is merely difficult.
It has taken me a long time to get started on this diet plan, but I have been on it 1-1/2 weeks now. I gained up to 320lbs and since the time I've been on the diet I've lost 17lbs.
That's awesome news, Kenny. Share all you are willing to of what you are eating and your exercise level, please, so that others can learn from your success!
Every thing I eat is grilled now. No sugar in my drinks, or breads. I eat grilled and steamed veggies, especially squash and zucchini. I'm eating many of the same kind meats but there are a plethora of way. I've swapped to black angus hamburger meat as well. Label reading and understanding portions has been a priority too.
As far as exercise, I train Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. I also mix exercise and play time with my son, he thinks it's hilarious when I strap weights on my arms or legs.
Ever watched one of the shows about the morbidly obese? I realized that even with me training on a regular basis, I was heading that route with my diet and over eating.
I actually went through withdrawals from sugar, started having headaches and nausea. After it was over, I have more energy. I feel like my mind is a bit sharper, the overall sluggishness is over with. I feel great physically, mentally, and spiritually.
My goal is to be 250lbs or under by October, after seven years I've been given the opportunity to take my shodan test and I want to be in the best shape possible for it.
