Only the same advice I would have for anything I have no experience with: check out the user reviews on Amazon and see which ones they like the most. Apparently, you can get the meters for pretty cheap--it's the strips where they getcha.
And I am the only one in the family who eats cabbage. Buncha slackers. Before one can become successful, he must learn to tell the difference between what is impossible and what is merely difficult.

I'm down 40lbs as of yesterday. One thing I've noticed is that I am extremely sensitive on the carb intake. If I get too much carb creep in my diet, I'll lose my progress for the week.

Awesome progress, Kenny.
It doesn't take much to disrupt ketosis and slip back into fat-storage mode. It will also have surprising effects on your hunger levels.
One of the things that I am becoming aware of is that the fat cells you worked so hard to build for many years have a hormonal say in your food intake. They WANT to be filled. They will always want to be fed. All notions of insulin and leptin resistance aside, for the rest of your life raised carbohydrate intake will likely result in temporary weight gain unless you are vigilant about eating windows a la IF.
Short of surgery to remove them, not much you can do about this. There is a possibility that you can reset your set point down the road via leptin and Dr. Jack Kruze's Quilt theory, but not too sure yet how I feel about it.
Keep the carbohydrate low, get plenty of berries, green leafy and colorful vegetables to go with your meat, and lots of animal fats, and you should be fine. Before one can become successful, he must learn to tell the difference between what is impossible and what is merely difficult.

I would like to say thank you for all the advice and support that's been given. In about ten days I'll be test for Shodan, and I have to say the extra stamina and mobility I have now feels great. I had a goal to reach 250lbs by my Shodan test and I weighed in at 278 this morning. I know I can get closer if not meet my goal, but I don't want to push too hard and not feel weak during the test. I have to say I've enjoyed the challenges of changing my eating habits, the highs and lows, and especially watching the weight come off.

Good work, Kenny. 28 lbs is not going to come off in 10 days, so just stick to eating the way you have been and you will get there eventually. I hazard to guess that you will eventually land somewhere south of 220 lbs, depending on your height and activity level.

I got back down to my high school weight. Below it, actually.
