Whistles
Everyone should carry a whistle while out in the bush, as far as I am concerned every child should carry a whistle everywhere.
What to look for
1) pealess
2) plastic, metal will stick to your lips in the cold.
3) at least 107 decibels
I buy whistles all the time, give them to my kids, my god children, my wife, my friend's kids.
Basically you can't go wrong with either Fox or Acme or Storm, buy whichever is on sale.

I teach a local survival course and a hurricane recovery program. One or more whistles are in every kit I design or recommend. My current favorite is a flat plastic one I buy marine supply stores. It is orange, is pealess, comes with a lanyard and is very loud. One of my students found them at Walmart. You can find some really cool ones at Pow Wows and Ren fairs. I recently bought a Fox micro because it was featured in some of the more popular kits. It was a total disappointment.

Hi Larry, what is the decibel rating on the Fox Micro? Why is it a disappointment?

I've forgotten, guys; what is the advantage of a pea-less whistle? Is it because if the pea gets wet it won't work properly?

Yes, pea-less whistle does not stick even when it's wet or over blown. It also has a high-pitched sound and designed to be heard over long distances.
