What happened up there is just starting to come out now.....turns out the other chambers (2 & 3 I believe) were melting down and they were give the appearance that everything is fine. Foreign assistance (such as experts from Europe and the United States) warned them of just these problems, but TEPCO decided they knew better and ignored their advice....now they are still figuring out just how much pollution they have released into the environment and how bad it is. The current radioactivity reading up there is like getting a chest X-ray every 5 hours.

I was worried about TEPCO's forthrightness when the French - the masters of safe nuclear power - laughed at the Japanese Government rating the Fukushima disaster a mere 4 on the Scale of 1-7 for nuclear power incidents. Also, Barry Eisler's books gave me a window into the corruption and face-saving that dominates much of Japanese business and government. Not that we are lilly white ourselves...
Still, I see a Japan recovered and booming once again. It may take many years, though. They are a tough and resilient people, but this was more than a single shot to the gut.

Japan has fallen back into a recession because of the quake; business is taking a shot in the arm. Electricity is going to be a major issue as well, because now the nuclear power plants are going to shut down for a while in order to re-fortify them. That means gas will be used more. I'm not so sure that things are pumping along just yet!
