Getting strated in AAU competition.

I am considering entering in AAU competition.
Is there anyone here that can tell me how to get started?
Maybe we need a sticky for these kind of questions?

Entering a contest is easy. The entry form will usually tell you what you have to do to obtain membership. In this case, join the AAU.

The entry form,often on line, will detail the rules and weight/rank/age classes that will be available.

I recommend Highly that you consult your instructor as to if you are ready to compete. Also check the web for videos of past competitions, it will give some idea of what your getting into.

Then train, train and train some more.

My teacher no longer instructs and he didn't do tournaments anyway. I am an independant
dojo and thought that I should try it out before allowing my students to participate.

I have been to a couple of AAU events and was impressed with the quality.
I always said that if I were to do tournament, it would be AAU.

What I don't understand is the Mandatory kata. I am Chibana Shorin but they seem to
only have Matsubayashi listed. I know of other Chibana based schools that compete
but don't understand what katas they are doing and how they are doing them. Matsubayashi
Passai is different from ours. Do they change their Pinan? Do I enter under Shorin or other?

Ray, contact my sensei. He's involved with the AAU and may best answer your questions. We've had kids (mainly) and adults and they just perform our kata which of course are Chibana-ha.
If need be PM me and I'll give you his number.
