    Default Kata Applications (Bunkai)

I found the following video which I found to be pretty good. So I decided to make a library of good kata applications videos. I'm in a benevolent mood.

Oh man, there is a trove of information here if you know what you're looking at.

Pinan Sandan Bunkai by Maso Yonamine Sensei.

Damn, there is a lot of crap out there. Finding good stuff is more difficult than I anticipated.

I do not practice kurunfa, but I saw some similar applications from some of the ones I do practice.

    Kururunfa kata and bunkai.

In reference to the first video - why does he block with the radius side of the forearm (the thumb side)? There's a nerve there and it hurts. Why not ulna side? Just wondering. I never understood this about Karate.

Really glad you posted this - I never, ever, in a million years, would have figured out what he's doing in those katas without this kind of explanation. Thanks!
I realize you think you understand what you thought I said, but what I am not so sure about is whether what you think you heard is what I think I meant.

That's where conditioning comes into play.

I get that conditioning the radial nerve area makes it less sensitive but I still don't understand why the school of thought blocks "thumb-side out" instead of ulna-side out or ulna-side forward. Both of those positions facilitate grabbing if that's what the blocker is interested in at the moment.

I don't see how thumb-side out could do that, be any faster or more solid, and it hurts. There's got to be a lesson there that I'm not understanding.

Does the idea stem from bladed weapons? Trying to reduce exposure of arteries to an edge?

You just answered your own question. If to the outside is going to put me in a position to lets say grab then to the inside may put me in position to do something else. It all depends on the situation. It's all about options.

This would take a lot of explaining, but there is a very solid reason for it.

I can only explain it from my background. The block in goju is a redirection rather than a banging block and allows you to stick to the attack. It is also not as painful since it's a redirection.

When you understand the why, I can tell you it's easier to miss the grab on a jab with the ulna side out. Thumb side out allows you to stick to and rotate into the grab. The attacker actually has to retract further to avoid being grabbed.

Idea has nothing to do with weapons.

We call this kata Passai Dai and perform it a little different. The bunkai though, are just about spot on.

Very familiar looking, but a little different. Great example of what bunkai should look like.

Good finds although I don't follow this "Karate Attacks" concept found in a few of the Videos.
I'm more into "Street Attacks" or "Jissen Waza" when it comes to Bunkai or Ohyo.

I tend to appreciate the likes of Iain Abernethy Sensei, John Buirke Sensei and Vince Morris Sensei as well as others found on YouTube like Oneminutebunkai etc. I've added links to their "Channels"

Sorry, but suffice it to say anything that Abernathy says I don't listen or pay attention to. I do not have any respect for him or his teachings. Take it for what it's worth. That's all I'm going to say about it and will not discuss it further.

The problem we have with Ian Abernathy is his marketiing and general tone of his product.

    Things like this.

    http://iainabernethy.co.uk/article/b...s-forgotten-95

Just because he comes from a broken line of transmission that was missing 95% doesn't not mean we do. My Karate is not missing anything.... except personal talent which I do not have.

He discusses the brutalitity of his Karate and puts a tons of disclaimers on everything. I have notseen anything from him that is as brutal as Sepai bunkai or for that matter any of our kaishugata bunkai. I have never gone into what tora guchi application on the internet.... never will. It is brutality for the sake of brutality which served a purpose in old villiage culture.

My guess it is just his target marketing tactics because dojo like our would pay money for him to come and speak anyway. But I am also the same guy who Psychology 101 concluded Freud was a bogus fraud who based his entire theories on the premise that just because he was a pervert he thought everyone else was to. I used to be pretty good at big broad based generalizations.

For what it is worth I know Vince Morris. I like Vince. We hit it off because we are both old Judo guys.

Yes, I do understand where you are coming from.

I take what is given by these Bunkai Specialists and use my own ethos from it. I just use them as References.

I have a good friend a Kenpo Karate Shihan who looks more into bunkai towards how the Okinawans did and I find his guidance more akin to mine.

Only thing is I don't like the Lunge punch attacks that mainstream karate schools do

Lunge punch is a staple of karate not "what mainstream karate schools do." If we're going to do true karate we can't pick and choose what we are and aren't going to do within it's curriculum.

What do you mean by not liking lunge punch? Do you mean you don't like it in terms of how it is used as an attack for applications practice? The purpose of that is your students can practice full power, speed and full intent and have enough available reaction time to not get hurt in class.
