    Default Audiophile poll

Here is an interesting story, Steve Jobs, the guy who killed the CD never mind vinyl, listened to vinyl at home according to Neil Young.

    Jobs listened to vinyl

so a poll, there are a few audiophiles on the board Robert, Dave Noble, Sean, Dennis...

Seems the sound of music has progressively gotten worse from vinyl to CD to digital...

I myself still remember the great warmth and fidelity of a vinyl record on a turntable through a solid state amp (tubes were long gone by my time)

But vinyl was a pain, it sounded great the first time, then the pops and hisses started and they were a pain to maintain, as was the turntable.

I actually think digital sounds better and is definitely more affordable than vinyl. I was in my mid 20's before I could afford a stereo component system, a Kenwood with a tuner, amplifier, turn table and dual cassette deck. It cost me if I remember right, nearly $1000.00 in the late 70's and my system was barely mid grade. A top system back then was $2000 to $4000 . Audiophiles talked about cutting the rumble and noise in slices of Dbs. that were not detectable by the human ear. A good stylus cost hundreds and had to be replaced every hundred hours or so, and certainly was NOT portable.

I actually listen to very little music these days, except when I'm taking my sons to Hapkido class or Guitar lessons.

I like vinyl, but vinyl is not practical when you are moving all around the country every couple of years with first my military career and then with Judy's. So CDs became the easy way to collect music and if you have a decent CD player (my first cost over $500!), a good amp and quality speakers, the music is amazingly clear and crisp. Eventually when Judy and my collection of CD merged, we had over 600 disks. I have since digitized all of those CDs in the highest possible quality MP3 format and collected many more CDs and digital albums since (approximately 1 TB of music). So while I love vinyl, CDs and now digital music is so much more convenient, and depending upon the quality that the CD was ripped at, can retain full CD digital quality. It's also really cool to have your entire music collection on a disk that you can slip in your pocket or backpack and take anywhere with you.

If you get the free software called Audicity, you can put the old pops and whistles of a old vinyl onto a MP3. Mind you it does make it seem less sterile than your standard MP3 audio.

But audio can be made "warmer" if you get the right speaker system. But why be espensive when you can have speakers on your monitor built in.
