crazi questun...
How would the faux-Japanese word "Obaki" be pronounced?
(o BAH ki?)
(o BAH ke ee?)
and is it actually a word that means something? I've heard it means goblin or it's a name (a person name, like Carl or Bob)
Thanks!Bill De Franza

Hi Bill. I ran this past my wife, but we need something more. Where have you heard the word? Are you sure of the spelling, or could it be "obake" (in which case it would sound like oh-bah-kay.. sort of.) which means ghost. There is another word for ghost (yuurei) which has proper Chinese characters, but you sometimes hear this one. I know Russ and Don could come up with a far more reliable answer, and they will.. but I like to find something useful to offer when I can

it's a nonsense faux-Japanese sounding (to my ignorant Jaigin ear) word I made up. it's for a shape changing goblin type critter that can transform into a huge rat and a huge spider.

Not a story, but a source book for the Castles & Crusades Role Playing game. I'm currently working on Castles and Crusades Oriental Adventures.
(If you're not familiar, think of Castles & Crusades as an easy to learn and more imaginative version of Dungeons & Dragons (The current iterations of D&D at least, C&C is more free-form and thereby, more like the original D&D)).
So C&C = Knights, ogres, trolls, wizards, elves, dwarves (think Lord of the Rings, Conan, Fafrhd & Grey Mouser, Lovecraft...)
C&C Oriental Adventures will be Samurai, Ninja, Wu-Jen, Warrior monks of various flavors, Oni, Hungry Ghosts, Kappa, Mongol horsemen-type warriors....
Been done before, for Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition and 3rd edition, but this will be the Castles & Crusades version... I just have to get the rubber to the road in terms of finishing the writing! I'm currently working on Monsters, which is a blast and a fun way to learn just enough about the various Asian mythologies to really muck them up and adapt them as good monsters to fight.
If anyone's into RPG's, dig the free QuickStart for C&C
Back on topic, if the made up word is too outrageous, I'll just name it in English so as to minimize how much I embarrass myself publicly.

"Bite the wax tadpole" is what I'm trying to avoid. :-D
I know this thread is like someone who knows a dozen words of English asking, "Does 'Znarotf' sound like a cool word"? but still, I didn't want to accidentally stumble on what might be "ass bag" or somesuch.Bill De Franza
