Freestyle Judo
This seems like a good idea:
http://www.freestylejudo.org/
But is it?
I just read an interview with one if the founders, Steve Scott (sensei).

It's an alternative. I would also like to see safe "unorthodox" grips being allowed (nothing that could snap the fingers)...seeing that most old school jujutsu schools call them orthodox- that by definition is orthodoxy for jujutsu.

I'm definitely an advocate of Freestyle Judo. The IJF has really done a lot of damage to Judo and has ultimately hurt it as a combat art/sport. The backlash against the IJF is just starting and you can bet that after the Summer Olympics, you'll see some possible rule changes... I just expect them to be for the better.

Freestyle Judo is a big step in the right direction. The rule set should reflect the fact that Judo is a Combat Art with Practical applications. Lying face down on the ground is a stupid technique in a fight and so should be penalized in competition.

I like the ruleset. I'm just now getting back into judo after a number of years away, but I'd rather compete under these rules than standard AAU rules.
One nitpick - the prohibition against leg-triangling the torso or any form of dojime. I can see maybe disallowing it on the grounds that it might slow the action somewhat, but they seem to regard it as so likely to cause injury that it can be grounds for disqualification. Really? In BJJ we use this all the time and I've never once seen anyone come even close to injury as a result.Tony Dismukes
