Tony,
Sounds GREAT! When I randori my students, in times past, I point out openings for them and even set myself up so they have more opportunities to practice the technique.

My first Judo teacher was great. You learned a lot and it was a lot of fun. My first time I did randori it was with my teacher. He threw me then reached down to help me up. I grabbed his hand then .... Boom! Ashi waza! He said with a big smile on his face, Don't trust me! It is my job to test you. It was a good dojo, ettiquette had a sense of seriousness to it but but it was interwoven with a sense of fun and we were like a family.
Every once in a while an butt munch would come through but Sensei pretty much was able to lead them to either conform to the general attitude of the dojo or they sought training more to their temperment. But Judo is hard. For about about 4 months or so I was just mat fodder until a new group of beginners came through and became the new mat fodder.
Even local tournaments were cool. We pretty much dominated men's heavy weight kyu division. There were 3 of us at one time that would sweep the division. Corky and John would vie for 1st and John and I would compete for 2nd or 3rd. I had no chance against Corky. Onetime at a tournment Corky had me in Osaekomi and was talking me through escapes. Today that would probably be hansoku but the ref found out we were from the same dojo and he was my senior and allowed lessons to continue.Last edited by CEB; 07-12-2012 at 16:08.

I'm still building the mental picture of the situation Russ (Mekugi) describes. This is at an after-school club, with judo students made up of students (and staff?) from the school... how old are the students? Do they already have Judo training when they come to the club, or is this their first experience? Is there more than one Instructor? How does a typical training session go, is there some taiso (warm-ups), kihon (basic techniques, solo; rolls, drilled movements, etc.), everybody being shown a particular technique to practice, then randori... or something altogether different. Please forgive my ignorance, as I've never seen a Judo lesson.
