Proud and scared
I wasn't sure if this goes here or in the Chat Lounge, but I've just found out one of my nephews is enlisting in the Navy EOD training. (basically, he'll train to become the bomb suit guy in the movie The Hurt Locker)

Naturally, I'm a little freaked, but proud too. My sister (his mom) is beside herself, as moms of enlistees sometimes are. It's a choice, as he states it, "not without risk." He's got a gift for understatement.Bill De Franza

Back in my youth I considered enlisting to do this work.
I used to joke, the best job in the world is bomb disposal. Your boss won't be looking over your shoulder screaming in your ear and you will only ever have one really bad day at work.
You should be proud. He's in my prayers.

EOD guys are crazy, but they are darn well appreciated. Tell him to pay attention in his training since his life will definitely depend on it!

Last time I checked (about two years ago) Navy EOD had the fewest amount of deaths, followed by the Air Force and then Army. A friend of mine who is EOD claimed it wasn't necessarily due to better training but better procedures for dealing with situations. He also will have the opportunity to work with VIP's such as the president, senators etc. making sure the rooms, routes are safe for travel.
Note that EOD school is very demanding. With a washout rate that is significant. Find out what the default MOS is if something happens for example soldiers default to ammo.Robby Hedrick

@ Robert:
ROFLMAO
@ sooner, that's what I told my sister: there's years of schooling and training, and many opportunities for him to fail out or realize it's not for him.Bill De Franza
